Hi, i'm looking at used XK8's with replacement engines. Were the tensioner and water pump issues solved as well as the nikasil with these engines or should i still budget to get them done?

How complex is basic servicing on the XK8?

Thanks!

Hi Gep

First join the XK8R Club on www.xkec.co.uk they have a great forum for members and get togethers.

The replacement engines was only for the nikasil problem, the tensioner problem showed afterwards.
Best to budget for tensioners and pump about £1200 by an Indipendent, £2000 from main stealer

Members of the XK8R club have done their own services, but a good indy would have access to the electric gismos.

What area are you in, let the club know and they will point you in the right direction for contacts.

The other thing you will then want is a fer aftermarket items as a new exhaust to give a good V8 burble and the list goes on.

Hi Norman, thanks for the reply

I'll join for sure if/when i buy. Still toying with the idea of another car at the moment (CL500) but odds on it'll be the XK8, i'm a jag man at heart!

I'm in Finchley, north london.

Reason i ask about basic servicing is i have a friend who works in an LR dealership. He's been very competent with my rangie (and saved me a fortune!) so if maintenance is not that specialised i'd like him to do it. I assume there are workshop cd's for the XK8 i can pass on to him?

Thanks again, Grant

Sounds there should not be a problem then.

Go for the XK8 or even better the 'R'
Worth joining the Club before, then you can get a feel of what to look for and the enthusiasm of XK8/R owners

Some cars will have had engine replacements later in life and therefore not covered by the manufacturers warranty.

My XJR had a new engine at 115000ish at great cost. The important thing with these cars is to find out where the engine came from. In my case I got an 'as new' engine from the factory (hence the great cost :rolleys, but I could have got a used engine for 2/3rds the cost... with no guarantee that it wouldn't fail from the same thing.

You pays yer money and takes yer choice...

Cheers, i'll bear that in mind.

I've been scouring the ads for a while now and havent seen a nice non-nikasil XK within a reasonable distance. This could be a long wait i think!

Nikasil isn't much of a problem anymore. If it was going to cause a problem, it most likely would have done by now. Also, you can get a 'blow-by' test done to check it.

By far and away the most important thing to check is whether a pre 2001 car has had the timing chain tensioners replaced with the 3rd generation metal ones.

Did read that on another site, i'd still rather just get an alloy bored engine and forget about it though. Seems a load
of hassle to be getting tests done on each car i look at, bet it would soon rack up a bill at £65 a pop!
