lights dimming
Discussion
XJ6 2 YEARS OLD
headlights(dipped or full beam)dim intermitently.
AND dim immediately if defrost is pressed.
Reported it on my last service some months ago and
Jaguar main dealer couldn't solve the problem - they said they tested several other cars in their workshop/showroom and they all had the same problem.
They said they would contact me when they had a solution but I have heard nothing from the so far.
A bit frustrating to say the least

One always has to suspect the alternator in the case of dimming headlights and I'm sure your dealer has gone over it with a fine tooth comb. It is normal for headlights to dim some when high amperage accessories such as window defrosters are turned on, especially at idle.
Voltage regulation on these cars is done by the ECM so perhaps it's an ECM issue and not the alternator, it could also be a weak ground some where.
You could try fitting a higher amperage alternator, but the problem may get worse at idle as you will only get the higher output at higher RPMs.
P.S. and welcome to PistonHeads.....
