I hadn't really noticed a noise until on the way to Millbrook a bloke from work pointed it out...

It's not loud at all, just a slight whiney / dull droning sound which I suppose may point to the Diff, the oil was checked on the ramps and it seems fine so there has been no oil loss.

Question is if the bearing or something in the Diff is shot is the noise loud or can it be quiet, should there be any other symptoms and with an Autobox is there an easy way of diagnosing a Diff problem ?

There is no notable change in the noise level either when putting the box into neutral and letting the driveshafts move the diff.

Or could it be a wheel bearing problem ? and again is there an easy way to check ?

Maybe I'm worrying about nothing as I've never really noticed that there is a noise until today as it's not that noticable.

The car seems to drive fine, It's going in to the dealers in couple of weeks so I'd rather know what it maybe first before asking them to have a look at it...

Car has done 50k miles by the way.

Cheers

Hi Mick,

Couldn't answer your questions for sure, but it maybe the prop shafts with slight wear too, does it vary with speed. My propshafts (X-Type) whine at 60mph, £750 will sort it, but I'd rather put up with occasional noise.
