Hi,

I'm a noobie here and I'm looking for some help please....

I'm in the process of looking for an S Type 3.0 SE or Sport, around 2001 vintage. Can anyone help me with general info regarding this model.

What's it like on fuel?
Servicing costs?
Best colour combinations
Options to look for?
Any gremlins I should look for or know about?

Just any general information that may help my purchase..

My current car is a 2000 model C Class Mercedes Sport which I have owned for 2 years and it now has 81K miles on it as I do around 25K miles a year total.I want to move to a Jag after always loving the look of the S Type, The time has come to own one.

Thanks for any information you may be able to help with

Kind regards

Greg

Can't help with an S type, sorry. But I have an XJ8 Sport and it costs no more to run (Less - as it is more reliable) than my previous guzzler, a mercedes 300te.

I have a mate with a (year 2000 I think) S Type.

One problem that has come to light are weak automatic gear boxes. The box fails to select the correct gear (intermittantly) and the gearbox warning light illuminates. I believe later S Types and X Types use a different box now but I'm not sure when it was introduced.
Unfortunately you cannot buy reconditioned gearboxes or get them fixed and a new one is £4K or you take your chances on a secondhand one.

Also S & X Types suffer from wear on Ball joints. Jaguar dealers like to sell you whole hub assemblies at £400.00 a corner plus fitting (which isn't necessary).

But don't let these things frighten you. They don't happen to every car and if you buy from a dealer they'll be covered under the warranty.

Hope this helps.
