I had a good idea what was going on from reading older posts, but last week I got to see first hand what had come adrift and was causing the limp-home trips each time I pulled away. The initial clutch pack (whos drive slips through the torque converter) had fatigued around the groove which is used to retain the clutches, about half of the groove had come away and was free in the box. £1300 later she will be back on the road, like new. Should do another 85K miles then......
In five years of ownership I have done the secondry tensioners which cost me £110 fo the bits and the front wheel bearings which the local dealer pushed in for me once I had stripped the hubs from the car £200ish IIRC. So I suppose 5 years maintenence isn't too expensive, for a 12 year old car.

Sorry to hear AJ,

After finding out about the so-called 'sealed for life' fiasco and a number of other horror stories on these gearboxes, I shall be carrying out a full oil and filter change every 60k to keep things sweet thumbup

I noticed in the XKR handbook it says to change the gearbox oil if used on the track. Wonder how much that costs.

From memory, and this could be wholly inaccurate, Merc used the same boxes and offered a service kit to enable easy oil change.

Certainly an old contacts dad was a ZF service engineer and ran his own place, and instilled the need to change the oil fairly frequently (around 40k miles) to keep things tip top.
