Good Morning , seems you are restoring one of my old cars the Jaguar Lister Coupe with the 7 litre engine and the 5 speed GERTRAG , it was originally made for one of the TETRA PAK heirs , and had the twin supercharged unit in it , which was apparently a bit hairy ( I drove an XJS with that in it back in the day and it was pretty scary ) anyway if there is any way I can help you with your project do not hesitate to ask.
Laurence Pearce who made it and sold it to me is still in the business so you can probably give him a call as well.
Have fun with it , I know I certainly did.

Just received a letter from Jaguar Heritage confirming the original paint colour applied in the Coventry factory was Regency Red back in 1975. For curiosity I was just interested to see what the first owner had chosen.
So are you going back to a red shade as a nod to its original build colour? Would be a bit of a sleeper seeing as you are going back to original chrome trim No I would like to keep it as a dark blue. Had the factory colour originally been blue then I would have been tempted to use a factory blue colour hence asking Jaguar. The car will end up in a blue colour as the seats are already piped in blue and in pretty good condition thankfully.
Just thinking ahead does anyone have any thoughts on how to make a v12 Jaguar sound better? Will be using tubular manifolds and deleting the middle box but always think these cars don’t quite sound right. Why does an e type have a balance pipe between the exhausts and xj does not?

I was down visiting Winspeed last year or the end of the year before when they started up one of the V12 E-Types they were working on. It made the most glorious snarling noise. No idea what had been done to get that sound out but it was magnificent. Rob when I get the car up and running I will try a few options out to experiment with the sound. I don’t want anything too loud but would like to create a nice sound that is not an annoying drone when cruising along. (An old school American V8 just sounds great without needing to experiment to me?) if that makes sense?
I’m no exhaust expert but I don’t think you will get a big block lazy v8 sound. You might get more of a snarl with a lighter flywheel so it revs and drops quicker with the associated over fueling pops and crackles. My xjc is a 6 and that when running sounded like the early 6 cylinder 3 series BMWs. My exhaust system is a sport manifold, centre silencer and a small silencer before each tailpipe. A 12 will sound even more refined than a 6. I’m really not familiar with the Jaguar v12 sound other than a standard quiet e-type. I know yours is a bigger cc version but is it a nice road engine with lots of low down torque or is it an instant high revving animal?
I've been told that, at idle my XJ12 sounds like a motor boat gurgling in the water... all I did was fit a stainless system from the standard headers with the centre boxes deleted... Have you guys heard the V12 with the X pipe fitted? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd-BS3L46Ug
Had a listen to a few Jaguar race v12s videos and they range from loud to really loud lol. That video posted above sounds nice. Once moving it wouldn’t sound much above tyre noise. I think if my own car I would keep left and right bank separate exhaust wise purely as a way to determine emissions levels and engine tune per bank and just fit a silencer behind each tailpipe. The guys that fit the silencers will have a good idea of how loud or how much of a burble you want.
There is nothing subtle about this exhaust note you either love it or hate it?

Love it! Sounds like a ww2 p51d on tarmac waiting to go. The bag of spanner’s sound is the echo of each cylinder through a very unsilenced exhaust pipe. My tvr Griff sounds very similar in a v8 way.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcPqVuF5FJo
Xj220 uses a v6 which I believe was also fitted to the 6r4 rally car
