Thoroughly enjoyed that . There used to be a Jaguar Specialist in Peterborough who owned one of these , he shut down a couple of years ago and I am struggling to remember his name

This man here . Anyone know him ? It would be interesting to hear his experiences because I am almost 100% sure David owned a Lister

Thoroughly enjoyed that visit to Tom Lenthall especially the glimpse of his Lister . I wont pretend much experience of the V12 , apart from having my pants taken down as a 17 year old with a money pit Series 1 XJ12 which after 40 years I still havent recovered from .
Toms wisdom regarding the V12 Jaguar issues was there even back in the Seventies . I can well remember my old man sat in his Triumph 1500 as a V12 drove past saying " christ thats a headache if it goes wrong ". Where he got this opinion from I never knew because it was obviously secondhand .
That said I dont know how I feel about compromising originality for realiability , Harry seems to be accepting this reality despite having already shelled out a substantial wedge .

I don't recall my uncle having particular problems with his, he ran XJ12s from there introduction until he was given a Series III VDP Double Six as a retirement gift (all right for some biggrin). The only one that had many issues was the last one which dated from shortly before Jaguar escaping from the clutches of BL. Even on that I don't think had engine problems.

Funnily enough it’s these later XJ12 that always seem to attract me and they aren’t big money .
It’s interesting what you say about your family’s experience of them back in the Seventies and how they were largely trouble free . Opening that V12 bonnet after a lifetime driving mundane cars was an intimidating site for any kerbside mechanic who had inevitably graduated from motorcycles . Where else could a V12 be encountered back then at that price point ? It’s existence immediately elevated Jaguar to another level

I love the early XJ12 S1 so fair play for having had one.

I have got to say the £10 to £12k cost for switching to an Emerald / Distributor-less coil pack set up in Harry’s video seem a mental cost to me……..

It is a mental cost but its Harry thats commissioning the work and clearly he is holding a bit of wedge .
Personally I always want originality as do the majority of other Jaguar Buyers . Tom Lenthall a Bloke
that knows makes a valid point that once something goes wrong its nigh on impossible to restore the
Engines integrity without another issue cropping up elsewhere . I hadn't realised this so it was great
you Posted the link .
As you no doubt know , after a few visits to any Garage regarding a V12 , its very easy to incur major
expenditure and Harry clearly pissed off has bitten the Bullet .
He wont I imagine be overly concerned with originality as come exit time , the Car due to it being Harrys
will still fetch top money .
It was the Wadding between the fuel Tanks and the Rear Wings that got me in the end , I remember lifting
the carpet and the floor being soaking too . I had bought her from a local "Arthur Daley" like Car Dealer in
Craigneuk Scotland and was completely shafted . A teenagers budget was soon exhausted but thats how we
all learn . Sadly I never owned another V12 .

I’ve watched that video also and understand chasing faults is time consuming, but Tom is the expert. Now surely having been involved with rebuilding the original system he knows exactly what is old and what has already been replaced. Now also as mentioned in the video, new wiring looms were also used for the engine bay at least the engine bay side of things.
Granted it’s Harry’s money but it doesn’t shine a good light on Toms ability to solve the issue, especially as he has already replaced so much.
Surely there isn’t much more to replace?
If Tom can point out the engine has been driven enthusiastically but can’t crack on and repair the issue? Seems odd to put that on a video for all to view.

Rob, I sort of had the same issue. You will recall that I sent the XJ to TL to have him refit the V12 and manual box, fuel tanks etc etc. Everything was reinstalled really well. Only issue was we could not get the timing right, it was at 26 degrees plus... everything was changed and rebuilt, new AJ6 ECU, new FI harness, new injectors, new alternator, coil (Fire 1000), rebuilt distributor, etc etc etc. TL suggested the new set up, but I could not afford it on top of what I have already spent... But I knew, it ran well and there must be something not quite right, was the distributor a tooth out? In any case It went to WSM and they put it side by side another XJ12 and found about half a dozen vacuum hoses incorrectly positioned. They remedied this and a couple of small items and she has run well ever since... but the main thing I took was the knowledge of the finer details of the V12 is being lost.

The widebody XJ12 coupe with the lister wheels looks amazing ... can't wait to see the final result.

There is also another great YouTube channel called "living with a classic" by a Swedish enthusiast and mechanic. It features a lot of interesting and helpful Jaguar V12 content (both pre-HE and HE engines): https://www.youtube.com/@LivingWithAClassic/videos

... makes me feel like I'm mentally ready for the '87 Double Six I just acquired hehe

Oh, and there is an EFI kit for the V12 developed by another Swedish guy. Looks like a very clean solution. However, I can't consider it unfortunately as my car will be registered under the classic car scheme here in Switzerland and modifications are not allowed:
