So far I have to say we have no complaints about Peter's work at all. The car is performing well and is not using any oil, so we have no reason to believe this was anything other than a good solution.

Frankly, you have a 7 or so year old car, with a years warranty on the engine. That's better than most places will give you on a s/h car, so I think everyone should be pretty pleased.

I assume this doesn't happen to later cars. I'm going to view an 06 XK8.

Hi, in reply to the posting "it can't be done for the money" I can assure you it can. We work on a fixed price basis, if we collect a vehicle and the engine is nikasil lined as a last resort we will reline it,but this is only if the owner insists on keeping an original engine no, normally though we will replace the block with an all ready steel lined one.
All the reconditioning work is carried out by a firm called South Wales Pistons who are F.E.R registered, the gaskets and timing chain kits are supplied from Stratstone Jaguar in Cardiff. We buy brand new crankshaft kits in at a discounted price so these are very rarely reground unless the stock is unavailable
The No1 failure on all petrol v6 or v8 jag engines is piston ring wear, leading to high oil consumption, which in turn results in a lack of oil normally followed by a knocking or seized crank.

regards peter
Sounds good Peter. If you are doing quantity then the price will come down. But with heads with guide wear ( which we know they suffer from)

Replacing 32 guides at say £20 per guide is £640
rebore with liners..........................£800
gaskets and oil pump/ chains and guides.....£900
rings( you can only be cleaning pistons).....£60
Factory Crank kit...........................£600
I make that £3000.

I`m not questioning your business,I`d like to know how you build them at such low cost, unless the factory are giving parts away.If you grind the crank ( crank kits have never been quick from the factory) don`t replace the pump (£250) don`t do the guides,I can the costs right down, but then it`s a compromise and i dn`t like compromises. That`s without labour on stripping/ building. Much time spent on plastigauge-ing the bottom end, cleaning etc, setting 32 valve clearances using new shims?re cutting the exhaust valve seats ( almost always need doing)I cannot see it, so break it down please, tell me where the savings are without compromise.
I`ve had these engines contaminate the block due to ste oil( semi syn can be anything from 40% to 2% syn ) Cheap oil is almost as bad as mineral which will not stand the service intervals without eating the crank or rings.Bottom end Oil film clearnce needs to be plastigauge checked in case the block/carrier has walked. All ends and mains are graded per journal,so are sized to the block/ crank carrier.I`m mystified

HI
AS I HAVE SAID BEFORE ALL OF OUR MACHINE WORK IS UNDERTOOK BY THE F.E.R. REGISTERED SOUTH WALES PISTONS. EVERYTHING IS CHECKED, ANYTHING WITH THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF WEAR IS REPLACED.

WE BUY WHOLESALE AND AS SUCH OUR COMPONENT PARTS WILL COST CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN YOURS.

KIND REGARDS PETER

Bit of a thread resurrection, but in exactly the same boat. Mailed a few suppliers Google has thrown up but any advice would be welcome!

Eurojag are worth trying. Main concern buying a secondhand engine at the moment would be establishing if it had come out of a flood damaged car - might not be an issue but it could be.

The problem with using an used engine is that you have no idea what state it is in or what mileage it has really done. Give Kevin a call on 01264 333523 or his mobile 07704321556 and he can give you a quote for rebuilding your existing engine.

At least with a rebuild you know where the engine has come from.

I have rebuilt more of these engines than anyone in the country and can tell you now nothing has changed. The latest model engines are failing in the same way as the old ones, burning oil and no low oil level indicator (so you don't know all the oil has gone). censored

Sorry not allowed.
