I've just been looking at getting some brackets and parts from VW as when I was changing the cam belt on my 16V Mk2 at the weekend, I noticed that a fair few of the parts were bent/broken and thought this might be the reason I lose power assistance sometimes in the wet.

Got all the part numbers from ETOS and just got a price from VW. £20 here and £40 there soon adds up. And then the prices of the PAS hoses One power steering hose - £138.54

GSF apparently don't do PAS parts so is there anywhere else anyone can recommend for slightly less wallet wilting prices?

And on the subject, does anyone know if the PAS loosing assistance momentarily in heavy rain is a common problem with a simple solution? I'm sure I read in one of the monthlies about a later splash guard being retrofittable.

Try Euro car parts, or maybe a local hydralic hose place could make something up for you, Ive used a local comapny for a braided oil line- about a metre long = £40 inc proper ends fitted.

Tighten the PAS belt?

Cheers, I'll try Euro car parts. Got an email back from GSF saying that they can actually order all of these parts in from Germany, but it only works out £50 cheaper (on £450 worth of bits) with the additional lead time.

Tried that. That might be what bent the one of the brackets. D'oh!

Cheers for the replies.

I have the same problem with my Mk2 8v. Very wet conditions -> slipping PAS.

I am thinking along the lines of a cover of some kind for the bottom pulley, but will probably make my own. (Old yoghurt container and some double-sided sticky tape and Robert is your mothers brother.)

Or just put up with it!

Hi Lex,
these are the guys you want to repair your hoses, save you a fortune, and a lot of the time they will be better spec than the originals.

www.pirtek.co.uk/site/uk_flash.asp

Your Golf should have a lower pulley cover on the inside front part of the O/S/F inner wing that is held on by screws or clips; it's just a splash guard basically but it stops water from being thrown onto the crank pulley and belts every time you are on a left hander in wet weather. Almost every GTi I've bought had it missing, but you can make one up from a bit of alloy and a wee bit of imagination.
This can be bloody dangerous by the way, coz one second you have PAS, and then the next you need arms like a blacksmith!
DON'T overtighten any of your pulley belts; you'll run the front main crank bearing, and that's not cheap!

Thanks for all the info everyone. It's good to know that I'm not the only one learning to be ready to heave on the wheel at short notice.

I'll try Pirtek and see what they can do about the hoses.

As for the splash guard, I found it in ETOS in the end. If anyone's interested, it's part number 191 825 250 A for the Jetta, Golf GL, GTI, 16V and G60 and the same but without the A for the rest. Then there's a couple of bolts and washers to hold it in place. Trying to decode the strange symbols and the like in the parts catalogue, it seems that it was only fitted to GTIs and the like from 10/90 on and to others from 01/91. Hopefully it'll retro fit without too many problems and for £22 didn't seem to bank breaking.

Thanks again guys. One day I'll get this car how I want it. And I might even know what I'm doing by then.
