What is the maximum horsepower someone can get out of the VR6 engine?
Any good website on this subject?

Depends how much ££ you want to throw at it.

There is a 480BHP turboed version in this months 'Golf +' magazine, and I know a few people with 300BHP+ supercharged versions, as Iguana says it just depends on your pocket.

Stealth Racing did a 370bhp turbo Corrado.

See here

But as my lizardly chum says, it all depends on how much money you want to throw at it.

A simple remap, throttle body and induction kit should see around 205bhp. A VSR, hotter cams and big-valve head takes that to around 225bhp. After that it tends to get fairly expensive in you want to avoid forced induction.

Slapping a supercharger on to get a healthy 270bhp and seems to be the preferred route for big power gains.

Turbocharging is the ultimate power boost, but is prohibitively expensive as you need to strengthen so much of the rest of the engine and drivetrain.

(These figures are all for the 2.9L VR6 engine in the Corrado rather than the more wimpy 2.8L in the Golf )

Edit: I forgot to add that the R32 Golf has a 3.2L 24v version of the venerable VR6, they just don't call it "VR" anymore. If you were starting from that engine then the power gains would obviously be greater.

As of course did the V6 4motion. The VR6 was originally intended to have a four-valve head (i.e. 24 valves), but they couldn't make it work in such a small space.

They figured it out eventually though, and brought it out for the Mk4 and R32 . Fitting a 24v version might get you more potential power.

550 bhp

Presumably this would fit the A3 3.2

only left hand drive versions.

The V6 4Motion has a smaller engine than 3.2 IIRC?
