I'm pretty sure VW state on their warranty documentation that you need to have your car serviced as per the manufacturer's recommendations within 30 days or 1000 miles, whichever comes first, of the indicated interval.

The audi virtual cockpit is a step up from the golf one. I don't understand why VW as a group has different virtual cockpits, I guess because you have paid a bit more for the audi (although think it comes with leather as standard) you get a few nicer toys, whether virtual cockpit on the golf is a standard item.

Am getting use to the car now, looking forward to putting my foot down a little bit more now, tyres should be run in after 600 motorway miles.

Tried eco for the first time this morning, think I will leave it in normal day to day. Haven't tried sport mode yet, will possibly try at the weekend. Am loving the dsg. Does take a little of getting use to it, but very impressed with it. Just have to work on my starts when the stop start kick in as I am a bit jerky at the minute, think I have the foot on the accelerator while the car is restarting.
The jerking after the car comes back to life following "start/stop" being engaged used to annoy me as well. However, I've now got into the habit of just lightly tapping the accelerator to get the car to start up and then re-applying the accelerator again to drive off smoothly.

If you keep your foot on the peddle (as I used to) it jerks forwards as everything starts and engages at once.

As an aside, if you ever want to avoid it turning off like, for example, at a busy roundabout then I have got into the habit of flicking gearbox momentarily into sport mode as this turns of the "start/stop" until you go back into normal drive or eco mode. I find this a better way of dealing with the start/stop as I would rather it be left on generally so I get what ever limited benefit it can offer when in daily traffic etc.

Still loving the car at just 10k miles and 1 year in. It also just had its first oil service and health check and everything came back fine apparently so it really has been 12 months of easy motoring. Here's to another 12 months (at least) more.

So, say the oil service is due on the 7th July, but I get it serviced on the 27th July, it should be okay?

That's great - if that is the case, I had read somewhere about the 30 days/1,000 miles, but wasn't too sure.

Just renewed my insurance on this, paid £403 last year, paid £568 this year. Extra years' no claims, I'm 25 now, nothing else has changed, so annoying, but I understand why it's happened! frown

Took mine on a weekend dive trip to Plymouth.

Got there and back on a tank (a little over 400 miles with running around) and saw 38.7MPG on the way home - Not driving Miss Daisy, but in Eco mode and not going over the speed limit - honest, officer wink ) .

Got two full sets of dive gear in the boot with the seats up and cover on, just our dry stuff on the back seat.

Nice relaxed cruiser.

After an RX8, it's a pleasure to only need to fill the tank once, rather than twice for such a trip! smile

Miss the balance and slick manual box from the Mazda though, although the DSG is fun and I love the digital dash!

I tend to try and get something different when I do swap cars, though, and the R is certainly a good kind of different to the Mazda.

Still waiting for a chance to really open it up though!

For a reference point for the guys still waiting or thinking about ordering, mine turned up last Thursday which was pretty much 10 weeks from point of order to delivery to the day! I was quoted 8-10 weeks and they lived up to their promise. Great service from VW Gatwick as well who kept me updated when I needed to be.

Car is great, wish I'd got one sooner, not going back to diesel anytime soon! Coming from a Mk7 GTD it's in a different universe!

Still struggling to understand why anyone runs an R and then drives around in Eco?! Surely just run a GTD?

A few hundred miles in and a couple of decent drives and I'm finding that I'm bonding with the car pretty well. There are a few niggles as below, but it's fairly rapid, well damped, turns in nicely and makes a fairly decent (if over engineered) noise. Great standard kit and my wife and kids seem to like it too.

The big issues I'm struggling with at the moment are:

very slow out of the blocks - it's great when it's going, but nowhere near as quick out the blocks as the S4/A6 I was running previously.

General finish and fit - welding where the boot lid meets the roof is shocking. Really messy. Also most of the bodykit feels like it would fall off with a small tap.

White is tough to make look good. Really considering getting a ceramic coating, but seems daft on a lease. Might just bite the bullet!

All in though, think for the price over 2 years, I'm a happy boy.

For me I'm just playing around with settings. I keep tabs of mpg but it's not the be all and end all.

Done a few journeys in eco the last week to see what it's like. I've mainly been in normal will venture into sport probably at the weekend.

Nothing wrong with driving economically after all what's the point in sitting in sport mode at 70 in 5th when there's another two gears.

Big journey over the weekend and am now at just under 1000 miles.

I like the car, took me a while to figure out which of the drive settings I wanted but I've found that 'Individual' is your friend, you can then set it up for day-to-day with comfort steering etc. without having to have it in 'Eco'. You can then of course flip to 'Race' when you want to show off to your mates. In this way it's become a great everyday dad-car but I can go mad when I get the chance.
All the way from Gloucestershire to North Yorks yesterday was comfortable and the radar-cruise is great for motorway driving.

Chucked it about a bit on the Dales roads round here and it's got a lot of grip and a lot of traction, you can be traveling pretty quickly so it's best to know the roads, I imagine you could be caught out pretty easily.
We took the race car to Cadwell on Thursday and I couldn't help wondering how the car would go round there - there was a GTi Clubsport there who looked to be doing decent times.

DSG is pretty much permanently in auto, I just flip from 'D' to 'S' every now and again to overtake or 'press on'.
It's very subtle in grey, only really for 4 tailpipes (which I dislike) and a small badge to say what it is, I like that - I'm 47 so far too old for lairy cars.

All in all, very happy and still surprises me how cheaply this much of an all-rounder can be had for.

A GTD AND an R? Surely the whole point of the R (over something more overtly sporting) is it does both really well.

A long journey in heavyish traffic on the motorway? Eco's perfect (you can always use the paddles if you need a swift overtake), you'll only get there 30 seconds earlier in Race! biggrin

An early morning blast on a deserted A road - Race and go!

General driving, Normal mode (although oddly this is the one I've not tried yet! biggrin)

I find 'Eco' mode to be awful for driving in - the extra delay on the accelerator as the revs have to build from idle when the gearbox (DSG) has gone into 'neutral coast' mode is not only incredibly annoying but borderline dangerous IMO. Maybe it makes more sense with a manual, I assume that neutral coasting isn't a thing on those boxes.

However, it's quite good for saving fuel when the ACC has been engaged and the car is 'driving itself' in traffic or just cruising at a constant speed. I note that when in cruise mode, the 'neutral coasting' isn't active on the gearbox so the savings are coming from less aggressive acceleration and presumably whatever other optimisations the engine uses to save fuel in Eco mode.

Overall economy with my Mk7 (pre facelift) is so-so ... I'm getting a long term average of just under 29mpg with the R whereas my previous TT 2.0TFSI was giving me just over 32mpg. I'd guess that the 7th gear in the new DSG on the facelift would probably be good for an extra 1-2mpg given enough cruising on the M-way.

Instead of, not alongside. As in, if it's MPG you're interested in then why get a 300bhp car. TBF, I probably don't do enough motorway miles to appreciate any mode that actually saps power for the sake of MPG, but certainly found in my old S4 that Eco basically made the car feel like it was broken in the pursuit of a few extra mpg.

I ran a Golf R and Eco wasn't bad for motorway it did get a few more mpg. My new S5 is a better on fuel in efficiency and still behaves ok for motorway but lives in dynamic the rest of the time!

Sat nav. Aaaaaaaarghhhh.

Just. Let. Me. Put. In. A. Fecking. Postcode.

Oh, no - has to be city, street, number. What kind of archaic interface doesn't recognise postcodes? Especially when your mate has a new build, in the middle of nowhere that isn't in a city, on a street or has a number. It has a house name and a postcode. Grrrr.

Am I stuck with this or is there a magic setting to get it to recognise postcodes?

Go to enter an address, then look for the button on the keyboard marked "Ptcd", probably bottom left on the keyboard.

Enter the postcode using letters, numbers and spaces.

Done.
