Apple CarPlay new A4 - ios9.3.1. Refuses to recognise iphone
Discussion
I installed a Pioneer Apple Car Play unit in my daughters car, had all sorts of problems with the thing not connecting. Turns out that the problem was using an extension lead, for the USB! Was a good quality lead, but as soon as I swapped out the USB extension + 300mm lightning cable with a straightforward 2m lightning cable, it worked perfectly, quite odd. The short lead worked fine when plugged in directly and I know the USB ext is fully serviceable?

That is strange. I have got the Pioneer unit (I assume there is only one?) and it has worked perfectly even though I am using the USB extension cables supplied. The problem is that Apple don't seem to have much interest in supporting it. I suppose it doesn't seem so important when they are not making money out of the hardware itself, but I'd have thought that this would be quite a key battleground. I have had iPhones since the beginning, but if I bought a new car that had Android Auto installed instead of CarPlay, I might consider changing to an Android handset.
I can't understand the Audi problem. Surely, CarPlay should be a universal system and should work the same if it is part of an Audi system or if it is on one of the aftermarket units by Alpine or Pioneer? I have been delighted with mine, even though I usually hate taking out the stock kit, but if the support continues to be so patchy I can see it dying a death.
My missus's Tiguan offered CarPlay as a £100 option but we bought one already built that didn't have it.
Dealer said it could be activated - for £250. Head unit asks for an activation code when CarPlay is selected. Turns out it can't be done and the story is VW have built the cars with Apple incompatible USB ports.
