One more question...

What's your advice on 10k cover for GAP which would include 2k deposit protection on the 2 year lease?

I've just taken our gap insurance with totallossgap. I decided £10k wasn't enough coverage and was originally looking for £25k, but totalloss have no cap.

Looking at 2yr old S5's on Auotrader you'll see that the cars are going for late £20k's. Meaning that the gap would likely be larger than £10k. Thats the way I looked at it and determined cover - open to other people's opinions though!

ALA recommend coverage at £25k for this car IIRC, and given that they beat other quote by 20% of the difference you want their quote to be as large as possible. Don;t go onto ALA and go for a 10k quote, go for the recommended and then get them to beat totalloss.

simonwhite2000 got his nicked and didn't even need to make use of the GAP IIRC. The fact that there is no VAT on these cars I believe is a significant factor in the settlement vs value, as the settlement has a 16.6% head start as such.

Guys, I am flip-flopping between an S3 Black Edition S Tronic deal at £1,049.58 + 23 x £349.86 = £9,096.36 for 2 years/ 10K p/a and a S4 Saloon deal at £1,234 + 23 x £411.35 = £10,695.10 for the same 2 years/ 10K p/a. Any thoughts? Except don't post in an S5 lease thread when you're talking about S4's and S3's..? smile

At the risk of stating the obvious, do you want a saloon or a hatch?
Also would you add any options, perhaps making a difference to the price gap

2 kids in the back (5 and 2 years old). Not worried about hatch or Saloon. Currently in a 335d GT, so it's big (too big if anything) and torquey but not very exciting.

I wouldn't add any spec on top of either - happy enough as they come

I had a Golf R and now have an S5 so can compare on some levels fairly directly. Note that the S4 and S5 are almost identical dynamically and spec wise. The steering is worse on the S5 (you get used to it though), and to an extent the handling compared to the Golf, but the S3 is also supposedly slightly worse than the Golf so the gap will be smaller. Power delivery on the 3 litre is miles better than the 2 litre in terms of flexibility IMO, although not bad in the 2 litre.

I was looking at an S3 until the S5 deals came on and then decided I was better off with the S5. The S3 may drive slightly better but the interior on the S4/S5 is far better (supersports seats as standard for a start), the toys inside as standard are better, the VC if you want it is cheaper in the bigger cars and the sound of the cars is a complete non contest IMO in favour of the 3 litre. Gearbox wise I would probably prefer Stronic but some people hate them as they don't seem to understand how they work, i.e. that they can easily be caught out if not doing the obvious thing. Also if fuel economy is your thing (or at least of interest) I am about 2.5mpg worse on average than I did in my Golf R.

I don't think there is any time I miss my Golf now, even when I get chance to have a blast the noise makes up for the reduction in absolute driving enjoyment and the rest (99%) of the time it is a far far nicer car to drive in terms of comfort and ride.

Personally I don't think I would want a saloon though (having a young child), if I was getting an S4 I would have an avant.

Having a young family with pushchairs and all the paraphernalia that goes with it etc.....I agree with Tom and would have the S4 Avant. An S3 is just to small in the boot. The S4 saloon is obviously better, but not great.

Yeah the S5 SB is kind of a halfway house and does what I want it to, the hatchback boot is the most important thing IMO. Saloons are naff IMO in the respect that they have a decent boot and then a letterbox to feed things into it through.

Agree - S4 Avant. Look great too (better than the saloon in my view)

Definitely. If the A4 saloon had lights similar to the A5 then it would be a different story perhaps but the lights on the A4 saloon don't look right to me. Still a nice car though and I wouldn't pay a lot more for an avant/sportback on a lease.

For me with two in the back, the choice was S4 Avant or S5 SB... so I did the right thing and went for the sporty one and put a Roofbox on top smile

Ha Ha, mine looked just like that when we drove to South of France. A fair bit of drag with it on though, but driving in Eco mode all the way there and back I managed to get 30mpg so was quite happy with that.

Anyone's insurance due for renewal?

Mine is due in a months time so been looking around and the cheapest I can find is £200 more than it was last year! I know of a few work colleagues who have reported similar increases (different car/age etc) so I'm thinking its due to the gov tax increase on insurance companies which they've passed over to us!

Wow, that's a lot. Did you challenge your current insurer about why the increase?

ALA recommend coverage at £25k for this car IIRC, and given that they beat other quote by 20% of the difference you want their quote to be as large as possible. Don;t go onto ALA and go for a 10k quote, go for the recommended and then get them to beat totalloss.

Makes sense, thanks. I saw that yours went walkies simon, at least your back in another one with alot of options on it.

Not yet as I have only just had some quotes. Interestingly, its the first time my renewal quote is actually cheaper than everyone else! Usually I always change as the renewal price is significantly more than other quotes.
