Oh, did I misunderstand? your renewal quote is cheaper to renew, but other quotes are £200.00 higher than the renewal quote you have?

Collecting mine on 5th so been getting quotes. I live in a high risk post code area in London, Elephant wanted 4k, alot of places about grand but aviva came out tops with 650. That's with no convictions or accidents and 12 years no claims, mrs on it to dropped the price, without her it's about 800.

Elephant are cheeky aswel, as your not registered keeper (for a lease) you can't drive other cars 3rd party.

A fair bit of drag with it on though, but driving in Eco mode all the way there and back I managed to get 30mpg so was quite happy with that.
Getting about the same. It was very tempting to ignore the roof box and just cane it. Which reminds me, I need to go back to normal tyre pressures.

My renewal is upcoming - perfectly timed with the arrival of the S5 a week today. Best price I could get was £1042 from Elephant with 9 years NCB, being 25 an average postcode and a CU80 I still have to declare for 1 more year.

Used to have bonus accelerator policies hence why I have more NCB than I have been driving.

I've just taken our gap insurance with totallossgap. I decided £10k wasn't enough coverage and was originally looking for £25k, but totalloss have no cap.

Looking at 2yr old S5's on Auotrader you'll see that the cars are going for late £20k's. Meaning that the gap would likely be larger than £10k. Thats the way I looked at it and determined cover - open to other people's opinions though!

ALA recommend coverage at £25k for this car IIRC, and given that they beat other quote by 20% of the difference you want their quote to be as large as possible. Don;t go onto ALA and go for a 10k quote, go for the recommended and then get them to beat totalloss.

simonwhite2000 got his nicked and didn't even need to make use of the GAP IIRC. The fact that there is no VAT on these cars I believe is a significant factor in the settlement vs value, as the settlement has a 16.6% head start as such.
Correct!
Makes sense, thanks. I saw that yours went walkies simon, at least your back in another one with alot of options on it.
Yeah I landed back on feet quite well really. Just had the Audi Lane Assist activated as well and although strange at first it is quite handy.
Got an Autowatch Ghost fitted as well and I would recommend it to anyone for 350 quid. Much better than a tracker and cheaper.

How does your Ghost work in practice? Is it set up so the engine starts but you can't change it from park until you press the relevant buttons? Am definitely thinking about it as I leave it on a road overnight.

Just had my S5 delivered this morning, 9am! Managed to get everything setup on the MMI and my smartphone which was fairly straight forwards.

No chrome on door handles as per recent car builds.

GAP insurance was £98 through totallossgap.

Car insurance was £450 with Elephant, 5yrs NCB, wife as named driver. Low risk postcode. Previous car was an R8 v8 which was only £320 a year, so the S5 weirdly costs more to insure

I had a Golf R and now have an S5 so can compare on some levels fairly directly. Note that the S4 and S5 are almost identical dynamically and spec wise. The steering is worse on the S5 (you get used to it though), and to an extent the handling compared to the Golf, but the S3 is also supposedly slightly worse than the Golf so the gap will be smaller. Power delivery on the 3 litre is miles better than the 2 litre in terms of flexibility IMO, although not bad in the 2 litre.

I was looking at an S3 until the S5 deals came on and then decided I was better off with the S5. The S3 may drive slightly better but the interior on the S4/S5 is far better (supersports seats as standard for a start), the toys inside as standard are better, the VC if you want it is cheaper in the bigger cars and the sound of the cars is a complete non contest IMO in favour of the 3 litre. Gearbox wise I would probably prefer Stronic but some people hate them as they don't seem to understand how they work, i.e. that they can easily be caught out if not doing the obvious thing. Also if fuel economy is your thing (or at least of interest) I am about 2.5mpg worse on average than I did in my Golf R.

I don't think there is any time I miss my Golf now, even when I get chance to have a blast the noise makes up for the reduction in absolute driving enjoyment and the rest (99%) of the time it is a far far nicer car to drive in terms of comfort and ride.

Personally I don't think I would want a saloon though (having a young child), if I was getting an S4 I would have an avant.
Thanks for the detailed thoughts. We're out of pushchairs/ buggys for the kids, so it's just down to ensuring we have enough space to dump the masses of clothes that my wife would pack for us when we go on bigger trips (rare). For the most part the car will do 10 miles a day in the week and make the rest up on the weekends where we get out and about often. Fuel economy will suck in the week whatever happens - my 335d will never get warm on my commute/ kid dropping circuit and return claimed 25mpg (probably less, but neither here nor there). Not too concerned about MPG on the weekends but yes the 335d can return 42mpg on a run which I know is out of the question on both the S3 & S4.

Saloon vs. hatchback - I get what you guys are saying. The 335d has an enormous hatch right now and just swallows everything and more. I am sure we could make the S3 work, but maybe once/ twice a year it will feel cramped. Most of the time it will be no hassle whatsoever.

The biggest thing for me is the S3 is loaded except Lumbar, plus has the B&O setup. I don't want to add spec and more cost on the S4, so it would be as it comes i.e. standard stereo, no tints (I like my tints).
Engine sound, as you say, no contest. It's the one thing that had me working for the best deal I could find vs. the S3.

Servicing and tyres will no doubt cost more on S4 vs. S3, so need to take that into account. As the delta between the two cars across the two years begins to increase from ~1.5K to maybe £2K when those differences are added in.

Appreciate the comments!

Sorry I probably didn't explain it very clearly. So last year my insurance was £1400. My renewal has come in at £1600. The cheapest I could find elsewhere is £1950.

I definitely want an Autowatch Ghost immobiliser fitted so would be interested to hear your experience with it? Also, did you get round to getting a tuning box fitted as I remember you talking about getting one?

At least you shouldn't get another CU80 in the S5!. judge I still have 2/12 years to go with my SP30, and the chances of getting another SP in the S5 are greater than ever.

I keep toying with idea, but interested to see what others think first. My reasoning is that if you have a decent steering lock on display then the scum bag thief possibly won't bother, but if you had the Ghost immobiliser they would have to smash the window first and get in, then only to find out they could not start it via the OBD.

Nothing negative to say about the Autowatch Ghost. The car will start but you cannot select drive or reverse without entering the code. Sure they can break in but they wont be able to take it and wont come back again. After my experience I would rather know the car cannot go anywhere and avoid all the hassle that goes with a stolen car.
I still use a steering lock, have CCTV, new house alarm, drive post, 2 security floodlights etc.

So is that the one where you have to press a sequence of steering wheel controls, or do you have an actual keypad? Also, are deterrent windows stickers provided?

I use a steering lock at the moment and would continue to even if I got the Ghost installed. The other good thing about the Ghost is say you got car jacked, once they turned the car off they wouldn't be able to start it again.

Car jacking's are extremely common these days so as silly as that scenario sounds its very possible.

Good to hear its working as it should! Any thoughts on a tuning box or decided against it?

TL:DR £490 pa 40s couple 15k miles, good rural postcode, 9 yrs protected NCB. Make sure LV get your number of doors right.
