B8 needs to be worked hard IMO.
RS6 for the win.
The point of a car with sporting intent is that you need to work them hard...B8 needs to be worked hard IMO.

They don't feel fast IMO. I don't know the torque profile but it feels like there's not so much below 3.5K.
Go and drive a w204 C63 Estate if you can. Even with the slushbox it magnifies the difference even more!

They don't always feel that quick, but for a bit of amusement I sometimes turn on the speed buzzer in my B7. They are quick They don't feel fast IMO. I don't know the torque profile but it feels like there's not so much below 3.5K.

Ref the C63, I do like them (though am not a fan of Merc interiors - especially the typography/graphics). But until recently they were not 4 wheel drive. Which is a primary requirement.
I think my perusing will slip into next year now. B8s are still depreciating a chunk and asking prices are a bit all over the place. Cars are selling, but only when their prices have adjusted. Still looks like the car I'll go with next though.

This is my first blog on ere.
I have a B8 RS4 limited edition before that I had a BMW 335i I thought the BMW was the the car to have with twin turbos but once I part exchanged it with my beast RS4 I would never look back...I have had many cars in the past i.e. M3 E46 etc and this car is the best I have driven so far, yes the take off is a bit slow but that could be rectified by remapping but because it under warranty with Audi (2 years left) I haven't done it as yet, its derestricted so the top speed is 180MPH which i haven't found a safe and open road for that as yet, I have taken it to 140MPH it felt like I was doing 70 at ease and plenty more to go but with so many cameras out there i don't think i will ever reach it's full potential unless i go on a drag strip or a track.
The RS4 B8 is the one for me, its a wolf in sheep clothing; who knows knows but who don't know they get a fright of it sound and its power when they are in the distance.
If my car is that good i hate to think how the RS6 is like.
If I was to take a chance and remapp my RS4 B8 (who is the best remapping company?) I don't think there are many cars out there which could keep up and handle as good as this 4 wheel beast.
This is only my opinion.

Not sure what order to write these in:
Excellent lurking sir (1 post in 5 years).
Welcome to Pistonheads.
Holy thread resurrection, batman.
There isn't a whole load to be had from a remap alone but MRC tuning get good results from the N/A 4.2 with some reasonably simple breathing modifications.

Best off getting a carbon clean done every 18 months on the NA engines.
I would save my money, buy an S4 Avant (supercharged) - have it remapped by APR or MRC with a smaller pulley, along with a sports exhaust, intake, front and rear roll bars, and big front brake kit.
You will have a car which is as fast, if not a tad faster, than an RS4, which doesn't succumb to the carbon build up issues (still happens but doesn't effect power like on the NA) , handles and stops better, but with change to spare even with the modifications!!
I've been in RS4 and S4 with smaller pulley and remap, and driven the S4 - the S4 is certainly no slower and if anything feels a bit faster especially in the mid range.

The only issue there is if you want to sell it on after a short while an RS4 would be saleable, a heavily modified S4 has a very limited market. Great if you plan on running the car for a long time and I agree with what you've written about performance and handling etcI would save my money, buy an S4 Avant (supercharged) - have it remapped by APR or MRC with a smaller pulley, along with a sports exhaust, intake, front and rear roll bars, and big front brake kit.

I'd also be very cautious about putting any more torque/power through an S Tronic gearbox, my unmodified RS4 chewed its up at ~15k. It's ~£15k for a new one from Audi.
Surely a carbon clean would need doing after x miles not x months?

A friend has a B7 RS4, think he did around 10k in 18 months it was down on power and needed de-coking again.I'd also be very cautious about putting any more torque/power through an S Tronic gearbox, my unmodified RS4 chewed its up at ~15k. It's ~£15k for a new one from Audi.

I wouldn't say it's heavily modified
Everything can be easily un-done and returned to stock, and there's a big market for the aftermarket parts.
I guess gearboxes is like everything, you win and lose - I know people running 500nm through stock DQ250 (Mk5/Mk6) box for 2 years, with only software tweaks to increase clamp pressure, going to every VW/Audi drag event. But then people like yourself who it gives up the ghost early and low miles!
DQ500 should be fine. My friends S4 is S-Tronic and I think he's got 70k on that, not sure how long it's been tuned.
It's certainly a risk worth noting if you feel unlucky
