More TDI Tuning info..........

I am having my TDI tuning box map 'tweaked' to better suit my personal requirements. If anyone is interested, here is an email in response to a few questions:

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your email. As I am sure you can understand, the finer detail as to how our devices Read, Decode, Interpret, Process and Re-Encode data from various sensors across the engine is closely guarded intellectual property; and because of this we can not divulge too much as to in-depth inner software and hardware workings of the CRTD4 SENT system. However I can certainly clarify the most fundamental elements of the CRTD4 SENT system for you.

The CRTD4 SENT system is packed with functionality which has been incorporated to cover an extremely wide range of vehicles. We activate the hardware features for each vehicle as and when they are required. This feature allows us to be able to offer you equipment which can be re-programmed and customised to suit thousands of different Petrol & Diesel vehicles. Ultimately, your CRTD4 SENT system will continue to provide you with extensive returns on your investment for many years. When we build our tuning files for each vehicle model, we build the files so that they can take advantage of the parameters which are available on the ECU. Essentially these parameters are deliberately left open for modification by the motor manufacturer. Motor manufacturers have to build a wide number of engine maps into the ECU in order suit an extremely wide variation of variables such as Fuel Grade, Altitude, Air Temp, Engine Load etc… With this in mind, we are able to activate other configurations which are already stored on your vehicle ECU. – Please be assured that this may sound simple, but the process of doing this without leaving history or permanently modifying the data on your ECU is complex! Ultimately, we are guiding your ECU to make the changes to Fuelling, Boost, Timing etc that we want in order to provide you with the gains physically achievable by your vehicle. Please be assured that everything involving the software on our products have been produced to suit your March 2017 S5 3.0 TFSI 354PS. – Unlike most other companies out there, we don’t buy products from other companies and stick our label on it!!

It is worth noting that the term “Tuning Box” is widely and commonalty used to describe many types of product which “Connect” to the vehicle via the engine bay. Unfortunately the important details of high powered technologically advanced digital control systems such as ours are often over shadowed by “Sub Standard” products on the market offered by other organisations which fall way below par. Those products unfortunately do a good job of tarnishing the industry as a whole. I can categorically confirm that our systems are not the same as supplied by other companies on the market, unless they are either an approved TDI Tuning Dealer or one of our approved white label dealers around the globe. We design, engineer, develop and retail our own hardware & software which allows us to develop equipment which has been directly inspired by client demand and requirements. The maps for your S5 for example are the product of extensive testing and feedback from our development team in Essex. That said, because our products are fully customizable, we can certainly personalize your maps for your individual requirements as per your email below.

We are open Saturdays but need you to confirm a booking slot for when you would like to come across. I hope this answers your question and if you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
What were your questions Ian, and is there something about settings of the unit that you are not happy about?

Are you unhappy with the box now?

Still more than happy with it, its now how the car should perform IMO. So much unexploited power to be had. I just want to get setting 7 a bit smoother through the power band in all gears. At the moment it's a bit too aggressive (jittery) from 1st to third gear. No other reason than that. Not a big issue at all, but since they will adjust it for free why not?

Still would absolutely recommend any S5 owner to get one, you have no idea what your missing. laugh

I did also ask exactly how the box worked from a technical issue to keep the 'armchair expert' debunkers quiet, and hence the reply.

Will they do a dyno run? - that would be interesting. Let us know how you get on.

His description (read...process...re-encode sensor data) is a long-winded way of saying that it works by sending altered sensor data to the ECU ("fooling it"). That *is* fundamentally how they work. Nothing wrong with that, and doing it well is probably more technically challenging than a remap (once you've cracked the ECU encryption!). You'll have some restrictions (rev limiter and VMax can't be bypassed, I expect) but a much bigger safety net than a remap.

Please don't think I'm "anti" tuning boxes. Regardless of warranty concerns they're becoming the only viable option as ECU get "hardened" by manufacturers. The supercharged CREC engine in the later outgoing S4/S5s has only recently been cracked by MRC (APR and REVO still have no map for it) . Yes, I'm wary of them on a lease car, but when my S4 warranty is running out I'll be queuing up too smile

Anyone fitted a dashcam yet? I bought a hard wire kit for my Rexing V1 but decided against using it since it's a lease car and the kit is not CE marked and has had some negative reviews since I bought it.

I used the bundled 12V socket charger instead and managed to route the cable very unobtrusively without removing any trim at all. The location of the 12V lighter socket and the structure of the dash/console really lend themselves to a nice discrete install as you can poke the wire into the gaps easily. The excess cable is bundled and zip tied to the plastic panel under the steering column.

Not much to see here thumbup

Tucked into the gap:

This nook holds the wire nicely on the door side:

Think I would only use a dashcam if there was a quick delete/wipe button... I've had biker friends been done (license gone!) from confiscated gopro footage after getting pulled. I can see why people use them though.

They're kind of geared towards the opposite but nothing to stop you turning it off if you so desire.
Mine allows you to format the card pretty easily but it's a few button presses. I drive like a saint though wink

My previous car was driven into by no fewer than 3 different people over the 2 years I had it so figured a dashcam was a good idea.

I'm not sure what the rules are. Only that they were pulled for excess speeding (and possibly dangerous driving) and the footage was used to pursue further prosecutions.

There has been a number of other people and it is definetly something that happens in UK. Just need to see some of the high profile cases online.

Section 19 of PACE gives powers to an officer to seize anything on a premise if he has reason to believe it was obtained as a result of committing an offence OR if it is evidence in relation to AN OFFENCE.

Ah, I was reading into the OP's post that using one was illegal. Get the the point now....Quite correct.

So in short, don't film yourself doing illegal stuff.

Seems to work well installed just behind the mirror. I get a fair amount of reflection from the grill in the dash in the lower portion of the image but it doesn't obscure vehicles directly in front.

Any pics of the camera?

Here's one of it fitted from the outside. From the drivers seat you only see the side of it.

What torque do you get with the TDI box? And at what settings do the quoted HP apply?

TDI Tuning HP & Torque chart is on page 3 of this thread.

Don't read too much into the charts. Regardless of which vehicle you select on their website, the actual "lines" on the chart are identical. Only their positions/scale varies. Compare this for a diesel excavator with the S5.

In other words, the charts are probably being generated on the fly from the supplied torque and HP figures. The lack of any RPM on the X axis is also bit of a giveaway.
