Average Speed Cameras Popped Up M4 London / A4
Discussion
I have noticed over the last couple of weeks the 60mph to 40mph zone coming into London on the M4 has had a number of average speed cameras put up. I assumed there were some roadworks coming. But oddly there have been no signs to accompany them - 'Speed Camera Not In Use' etc.
I didn't think they were active as there only appeared to be one camera in the 40mph zone. But this morning i noticed hidden on the other westbound carriageway gantry there is a small yellow camera that has appeared pointing onto the eastbound carriageway whilst in the 40mph zone.
Does anybody know if these are active. As like many motorists I am generally significantly exceeding the speed limit when leaving London in the evening (although I wont be anymore) to join the M4. I was last night and I was this morning.
Do I have some tickets in the post?

There are long term roadworks about to start on the M4, converting it to smart motorway.

It is awful bud, isn't it.I'm glad I don't need to commute any more. I miss it, but with these Roadworks....
I would be half tempted to have a remote flip up plate fitted. Proper council I know.

Although I am still to meet someone who has ever been done by an average speed camera!
ETA: Remote flip up plate is a one way ticket to jail mate. Perverting the course of justice. Better to have no plate!

Biggest roll out of speedcameras ever/ anywhere in the world.http://roads.highways.gov.uk/projects/m4-junctions...
Once SMART (actually totally dumb and v dangerous with hard shoulder running) is done nationally and the NSL is gantry enforced 24/7, the gaps between those dreadful parts of the network will get average speedcams between every junction........ probably followed by a 60mph NSL on DC / controlled access roads.
Why to UK citizens need so much more monitoring than other populations?

Can we confirm exactly where these AS cameras are?http://roads.highways.gov.uk/projects/m4-junctions...
The OP says "the 60mph to 40mph zone coming into London on the M4"
but the Shmart Mway link says "M4 junctions 3-12"
Those are different locations.

It's also not where Smart Mway is to be.
Are we sure these really are AS cameras?
Are they yellow, are there more further along in the 40mph, how far into London?

It's to force people to use the 'much faster' railways. Yep, this.So in order to ease congestion they're going to do roadworks on yet another artery into London until 2022?!?
I don't think I've ever encountered a jam on the M4 except inside the M25 and then only at peak time heading into London. But I assume I'm about to make up for lost time.
