I thought this may be interesting to fellow Golf R owners/renters.

My 19 month old leased Golf R is due it's first service. I have 3 VW dealers all with in a 6-8 mile drive of my house and called the first on my list who are based in a Spa town North of Leeds, to book my car in. I enquired what the cost would be and was horrified when the Service agent replied - 234 pounds and 20p Sir. I was absolutely astonished given this is for s straight forward Oil and filter change. When I asked if she had quoted for a major service by accident, she confirmed that this was not the case however, they do supply a 1ltr of Oil top up and add screen wash if needed. She also mentioned that the technician will provide a video of my car (all dealers do this these days) and wash it. Removing the spare oil reduced the cost to 216.96, so I asked if they could improve on this as the VW website mentions the 1st service should be approx 165.

She spoke to her Manager who suggested she was doing me a favour by offering a 'buy it now price' of 199.

I called another dealer - JCT600 VW in who's first offer was 164.99. When I politely asked if there was any more they could do, the price was reduced to 146.17 pounds without any further quibbling, inclusive of tax, loan car, video, wind screen washer top up and wash & vac, if I wanted it.

I expected there to be a difference in cost between two local dealers but not a spread of this magnitude.

If you're leasing then it doesn't matter, but there's supposed to be more to the longlife service.

On fixed interval it really is just oil & filter change - our more basic Golf was on a service contract and by mistake the dealer gave me a copy of the invoice they send to VWFS. £68.

I have normally found price differences between different dealer franchises. The first service on my M135i was north of £300 after they price matched, then haggled and supplied my own oil.

The first service on a transit doesn't even include an oil change!! And they still charge £99. Mental.

I'm just doing a oil and filter change on my MK3 Cupra 280 (same engine as Golf R) its out of warranty in a few days anyway so not bothered but decided to do it myself.

off the top of my head, filter and new sump plug is about £12, pollen filter about £8 and cost me £55 for Millers Nanodrive. All the parts have come from TPS (who are owned by VWG UK)

And I can video it myself haha, obviously I know you guys who lease and are in warrenty have to keep to vat registered places so no use to you but just pointing out how much it actually costs.

I got the first service for my R a few months ago at the dealers for £150.

I called 2 branches of the same dealer, one quoted £195, the other £165 and I haggled down to £150

They promised to call me about flogging me some new tyres soon as the wiper blades and everything else were ok so they couldn't upsell anything at the time hehe

Was that the fixed interval (12mths/10K miles) first service, or the car's first service on the LongLife service regime?

There's quite a big difference is the scope of the services - the LongLife one looks pretty well the same as fixed regime's 2yr service (because it might only come up every 2yrs).

Of course, it doesn't really matter in practice - I think the less the dealers mess around with your car, the better. But if you book a "first service" and the dealer is quoting based on doing an oil change and a quick check, they might kick back if they find the car actually needs the LongLife service.

OTOH they might not even notice - the dealers often seem to make it up as they go along.

Mine is on variable/long life and I explained that at the time of getting the quotes and it flagged up on the screen at about 12.5k / 10 months from new.

Ah, OK - in that time frame the cluster computer will bring the Oil Change Service and Inspection Service up separately.

JCT are a good bunch, I've bought several parts from there as they are often cheap on parts they have lying around.

I meant it doesn't matter in terms of preserving the car. All you have to do is comply with the terms of the lease and you might as well do that as cheaply as possible.

Of course if you're concerned for future owners, maybe you're even thinking of buying it yourself, then that's another matter.

Do TPS sell Millers oil? Personally, I use Quantum LL3. Cheap as chips.

Just had mine done today. Paid £164.14, including the courtesy car insurance. Not great. But not bad. Car feels nicer.
