I tried that, was at it for an hour, the haze has gone and the look a lot better. But there are deep scratches that simply won't budge. I might have another go, going a bit more aggressive on the first grade.

Funny we have the '58 Mk5 GTI and a '51 Mk4 GTI. I like them both in different ways.The Mk4 is better built and feels responsive low down, but handles poorly.
The Mk5 is handles better and has more overall go.
I don't understand the negativity on either. Both can be improved on out of the box (the Mk4 needs more work).

Yep, you would floor the throttle and nothing, then the next time it would be off like a scolded cat. Sometimes it would run lumpy, others smooth as silk. The worst bit was the 'running on' like the throttle was still pressed. That was disconcerting when approaching traffic.

Yeah that throttle run on is weird. Only lasts for like a second or so, kind of felt like the brakes had lost servo assistance! Weird. Doesn't do it very often, thankfully.

Amazing the ECU never fault coded it. I guess it just seamlessly substituted it's values from other sensors.

That swarf appears to come from the fuel pump cam bucket, so i'd give that a check if you haven't recently.
