No need to spend out on new ones. It's a relatively quick and easy fix. All you need is a few sheets of fine wet and dry 600 > 800 > 1200. Then you can either polish out the haze or just clear right over them with a rattle can. Gets them looking as good as new for about £10 and 30 minutes.
I tried that, was at it for an hour, the haze has gone and the look a lot better.

But there are deep scratches that simply won't budge. I might have another go, going a bit more aggressive on the first grade.

Interesting. Sounds like mine with the running on when coming off the throttle and occasional rough idle. I might have a look at the cam sensor then as it's easy to get to. Normally get a P0340 fault code with that though.
Mine wasn't throwing a code either.

Just got rid of my Mk4 GTI 1.8T shed for a 08 Mk5 GTI. Ticks all my boxes for a daily, TBH I'm quite taken by it & have been enjoying driving it on my commute for the past week. Might be new car syndrome; but I don't understand the negativity that you tend to read in General Gassing about them.
Funny we have the '58 Mk5 GTI and a '51 Mk4 GTI. I like them both in different ways.

The Mk4 is better built and feels responsive low down, but handles poorly.

The Mk5 is handles better and has more overall go.

I don't understand the negativity on either. Both can be improved on out of the box (the Mk4 needs more work).

Did yours also feel like it was intermittently towing a caravan for a bit, and then suddenly woke up and felt faster and smoother?

Yep, you would floor the throttle and nothing, then the next time it would be off like a scolded cat.

Sometimes it would run lumpy, others smooth as silk. The worst bit was the 'running on' like the throttle was still pressed. That was disconcerting when approaching traffic.

All cured. smile

Thanks mate, I will get one ordered.

Yeah that throttle run on is weird. Only lasts for like a second or so, kind of felt like the brakes had lost servo assistance! Weird. Doesn't do it very often, thankfully.

Cam sensor is 06C905163B, £38, in case anyone else experiences the same issue.

Good call Mr Betrum. Mine was also covered in swarf. Popped a new one in and it feels like a new engine!

Amazing the ECU never fault coded it. I guess it just seamlessly substituted it's values from other sensors.

Great to hear it.

That swarf appears to come from the fuel pump cam bucket, so i'd give that a check if you haven't recently.

You'll need to relaquer or cover them in something like lamin-x otherwise they'll deteriorate quickly in the sunlight. Lamin-x gives a lovely sheen but is a bugger to fit.
