Haven't read the whole thread, but £6-8k for the engine replacement on an R sounds very expensive.

You can pick up a second-hand engine for ~£1k. Loads around. And get it fitted at an indy for ~£1k.

Should be £2-3k at most.
Might need to read the thread, it's been mentioned a few times. Not a viable option for the OP unfortunately.

The point is that doesn't come with a VW warranty which the lease requires.
Don't tell the leasing or finance company.

They will only bang it through the auctions the day after you hand it back.

Of course, if they've already told the leasing company, then they're screwed.

What else would you call someone that voluntarily read the ramblings of other dullards and then made a dull comment on it?

VW, I'd assume will re-con the engine?
That's a good question. I assume VW don't sell reconditioned engines, so while they want the original one back, I have no idea what actually becomes of it.
VW will strip it down and assess the damage and potential cause, then the most outrageously damaged bits will become ornaments on the desk of the most senior person who took the engine apart. The rest will end up in a skip no doubt.

Given we now have a full conclusion is it worth wrapping up the thread and closing?

Why close it, just let it run.

I wonder why you'd want this closed? Another Welshbeef special.

ah so when a viewer goes to watch a movie and its awful its the viewer who is at fault not the movie makers.... i see your logic

well the movie poster for this thread offered so much yet it delivered so little

lots of these "you are making it up and i know so based on no evidence" threads pop up across the internet.

they usually end in the OP being driven from the forum and those who have scared them off sit back and admire their work.

interestingly in this one the OP stuck to his guns (seemingly correctly) and the only response from the forum folk is "meh" haha

Wouldn’t want it to clash with the other open thread on ‘what watch for the price of a golf R rebuild’ hehe

loss of compression points to floating valves which i don't think you will see and the engine in the hands of VW probably never know.

The facts are, the story was always plausible but had more holes than Swiss Cheese. All engineered by the OP. The never, once said, I’ve approved a rebuild. It would seem he has paid 8k for a mistake. Anyone with an ounce of smarts would get a second opinion just to know you aren’t being shafted. My criticism was all about the limited facts and unwavering refusal to acknowledge sound advice which was, get another opinion or pay someone to open the engine.

You would absolutely know that nanosecond, that you had selected a wrong gear and smoked the engine. It would make some interesting noises. My last advice would be, if he didn’t know then buy a DSG.

We know something has gone inside the engine for no compression

We know an accelerometer positioned somewhere has given an overspeed

If I had rammed it into first or second, I'm gobsmacked there's no signs on the clutch or gearbox, opinions I have sought have suggested they would expect damage in these areas.

I have listened to advice and I am taking it further.

It’s a bit late. They have your money and old parts. You won’t see any investigation now, matie. Hence, second opinion.
