Not sure on the body panels, I think the s4’s are quite plain on the looks front which I kind of like as besides the badges and quad tail pipes it’s abit of a sleeper.

As for the paddles from what i’ve seen I think they were an optional extra

They are the same I’m afraid. The RS4 however are wider.

So what sort of a figure would the cam chain replacement be, unable to find much for this side of the pond for some reason, seen an early 06 with fsh on 136k miles but the present owner has no knowledge of them being replaced just been reduced to £5400

A few months ago I had the chains, tensioners, cam adjusters and timing case adjusters replaced on my B6 S4, all in it came in at £5,100.

Around £1,200 of that was labour, so goes to show how much some of the components cost! Needless to say the only real option is genuine Audi parts.

If you just get the chains and tensioners done then you'd likely be looking at £2.5 - £3k, including the labour. I ended up getting the other parts replaced as some of it showed signs of wear and as I plan on keeping the car a fair while, did it for peace of mind.

Make sure to get this work done by a specialist who's done it before.

Wow! So with the above example it could cost you the price of the car again!

Buy carefully!

Wow, really did not realise the costs were that high, I just assumed it was the chains, tensioner and guides that would need replacing, not the other parts! It makes me wonder what a reconditioned engine would cost! Are the cam and timing case adjusters usually items that need replacing with the chains or was just because of the wear when inspected?

You can understand now why at the first sign of any rattle these cars hit the market. Best bet is definitely to buy one that has had the work done, with receipts to prove!

Well that’s the dark blue one sold, not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing as was very tempted!

Interestingly a guy I work with has an S5 4.2 V8 and he’s been flaunting me with over the last couple of years when he buys something new. Problem is, after looking at prices it seems to have gone up in value!

Despite all the challenges with these V8s, as mentioned earlier they may start to become in demand. I certainly want one before I give in to the ev world...

It's certainly one of the more expensive repairs to have done! You don't strictly have to replace everything like I did but made the choice down to stories I'd read online and heard from two separate specialists. It went along the lines of if you just have the chains, tensioners & guides done you're running the risk of other parts failing soon after. I know I would have been kicking myself if after a year I'm having to spend another grand or more on just labour to have the engine removed to fix those other parts!

But, beyond the chains issues, these engines are very solid, along with the rest of the car. We're also seeing prices bottoming and I can see them slowly creeping up over the next 5 years or more.

These cars and their engines are still a damn site more interesting than a lot of new stuff which would cost you more to lease or HP.

I've been running a 2008 B7 S4 cab tiptronic for the last 6 years. Whilst it's now a second weekend car it still feels a little special every time you wake up 8 cylinders, especially with the recently fitted Milltek...

6 years of S4 awesome'ness? well done that man! had my B5 for 5 glorious years.

was messing about watching youtube acceleration clips(I know right?!) of B7 2.0TFSI v B7 S4, and the overriding sense is the sound, not of the exhaust, but of how hard the 2.0 engine is pushing compared to the S4, which just sounds like it's well within it's limits, even when revving up to 60mph.
I had thought of maybe getting a 2.0TFSI and chipping to say 265bhp - but on seeing those clips, you'd be asking for trouble.
Or are these 2.0TFSI's as bullet-proof as we're led to believe?

I owned and ran a 2006 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro with a Revo map for around 4 years with no issues at all.

interesting, thanks Audisport - regarding the Revo remap - did you find any improvement in mpg? seems to be something that's always promoted with these upgrades?

Also, on the B7 S4 - were there any upgrades, or 'facelifts' from year 2005 into year 2006 models?

I’d be very tempted with a 2.7t swap when the chains go - fairly simple from what i’ve seen.

Does the S5 suffer the same issue - engines look different.

slight thread resurrection!

This one looks very well presented. Priced nicely too. No mention of the chain though.

B7 Avants a bit thin on the ground again.

Anyone here making moves?

straight forward question this time then;) - would £6k get a good, not mint, but good B7 S4 Avant?

Piece of string, sadly. No 10 year old car is mint but a nice example with no engine issues I can easily see commanding more than that (unless you're lucky). When there are so few cars available it only needs two people to want the good one then its value is determined by whichever party has the deeper pockets (and/or faster trigger finger).

You'll need to be prepared to investigate a lot of cars and be in a position to move very quickly when a good one comes up.

Thanks for reply Dr G - much appreciated.

your spot on though - the good one's really are thin on the ground. Being based in Ireland also adds an additional layer of difficulty!
When I got my '00 S4 Avant back in 2011 - I got very lucky with a lovely gentleman in Cheshire (that doesn't read well!) he was meticulous and really looked after the car. I'd seen it pop up for sale in April of that year for £5,200 - to rich for me at the time. But never really forgot how well the add sounded and car looked (gleaming Hibiscus Red) then out've nowhere it popped back up for sale around Aug for £4,500 - I promptly had the car RAC checked - a glowing report followed, and also rolling road'ed - all checked out, very healthy figures (265bhp/325lbs)
Booked flights and was driving it home within 3days. And as most (all)! these stories end..........regretted selling it ever since!!!
