Not sure how this is a bargain?
still £14k for the tiniest, entry model vw with good trim and a basic engine.
What car do you recommend for £13,750 list then? still £14k for the tiniest, entry model vw with good trim and a basic engine.
If it was me and I had to buy new my first thought would be something like a smart fortwo with the 90hp engine..About 11.5k list?
£12k certainly makes it competitive though.

I think you’ve completely missed the point of this car.
+1How can one compare the Up Gti to a smart car?
I'm tempted by one of these as my daily runaround, smart looking, top of it's range, and an interesting car with a Gti badge.
I had a Panda 100hp a few years ago, I loved that, this Up Gti reminds me of that.

For a new car can’t think of many premium cars that can compare. Maybe the Swift Sport but the new one is utterly gopping. Ka doesn’t have a hot version. And new version of that is hideous too.
For my money I’d consider a facelift MINI R56 2010+ or an Abarth 595. Both of those seem dynamically a bit more grown up than the Up GTI based on reviews at least,
See why kept costs low but would have liked the option of at least rear discs. My Cooper had roughly similar power and bit more weight, but has discs all round. I’m after a car capable of the odd track day and not sure if it’s going to be capable of that in standard form.
My dealer has a demo - just need to pop down and try.
A Smart 2 seater though is not comparable to any of the above. Even the Ka!

I still don’t think it’s comparable to a Smart ForTwo, not even in the slightest.
Maybe not first time drivers but maybe aimed at first fast car/fast city car. I may wait to see if a option pack comes available to make it a bit more racey. Would like to be proved wrong though! I’m nearer 40 than 30 but just love fast small cars.
Otherwise I’m sure aftermarket could tweak nicely.

The option packs for the GTI and R don’t fill me the confidence that anything they do would make it significantly better. Milltek already has a titanium exhaust in development, and the 90bhp TSI is being boosted to 130bhp with a simple map. Throw some Eibach springs and some sticky rubber at it and I think aftermarket will provide a lot of value. Otherwise I’m sure aftermarket could tweak nicely.

2) I wouldn't buy new either, but that doesn't appear to be up for discussion.
3) I think your obsession is more to do with aesthetics than anything else.
4) If you're looking for cheap fun on the track,
get a sports bike.
5) I stated what I would purchase if I was looking for a stty city car. The smart forfour is still cheaper.

You could do a full on twingo rs engine conversion with 200hp, roll cage, bucket seats, suspension etc

If I wanted a Renault or a motorbike I’d be on a different forum mate. Best move on.
Think we’re on the same page. Renault might be something I’d consider but they also seem too plastic and cheap on inside... and at no point am I ever going to get a bike license etc etc.I know a tuning company that does a lot of VAG stuff - AMD sure they’ll be able to offer improvements sooner or later.

4) If you're looking for cheap fun on the track,
get a sports bike. already have cheap fun track car it’s getting on a little but I can’t fall of it
5) I stated what I would purchase if I was looking for a stty city car. The smart forfour is still cheaper. now now

It has a 'Petrol Particulate Filter'. Eh? Oh no - they aren't in petrols now too are they? And a city car to boot.
I researched this a fair bit, particularly as my car will basically be used for very short journeys, and found they work in a completely different way to a DPF. Read this thread –https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=16...
As one poster says, it's a none issue.
A VW UP! is not a premium car. Not even the GTi.
I don't think any current VW is premium - they just have great marketing department, a nicer interior - which journalists say means they have "great build quality" - but are put together using many of the same/worse quality, or even the same, components as a Ford or whatever. So the interior may be more solid but VAG cars have so many reported issues that this great build quality does not seem to translate into real world quality.
If you want one, go try it out and buy one if it pleases you.
VWs are very "nice", but not premium - I have one.

What part of “in comparison to the competition” don’t you understand?I don't think any current VW is premium - they just have great marketing department, a nicer interior - which journalists say means they have "great build quality" - but are put together using many of the same/worse quality, or even the same, components as a Ford or whatever.
