Check the turbo properly.

We bought a 2nd hand Golf GTI Mk5 a couple of years ago and recently the turbo seemed to be 'whistling' more on start-up and acceleration.

It failed and the bill wasn't small.

Thanks, but I wouldn't know how loud the whistling should be?

"They all do that, sir"

Any advice on mileage?

Lowish mileage car (70,000) that's had nothing done to it or higher mileage (100+) with the bits done?

Have been on the GTi forum and there seems to be lots of upgrades (non performance) that members have done.

A failed turbo can be down the the oil never been changed, or rarely.

The oil feed pipes are very narrow, wont take long to knacker a turbo if the oil supply is restricted.

Any thoughts on this GTi anyone? All appreciated.

Looks expensive. I paid less than that 4-years ago for mine, which was also a 2006 55-plate 5dr DSG with just under 100k miles.

I would agree about the comments on leather. The tartan effect Cloth seats are really nice and don't seem to wear out very easily

I don't have any problems with my leather interior.

Yes maybe, but very few cars around for sale.

Anyone selling?

The search continues but I'm slowly losing the will.

I've been in touch with a few dealers, mostly who never phone back or respond to emails. I've decided they don't like people who ask difficult questions like "what size wheels are on the car' and "does it have full service history". Gawd knows how any of them expect to sell their stock with their couldn't care less attitudes.

Anyhoo, I've found this one which has all the right spec apart from a set of wheels and coilovers that I'm not particularly keen on, considering my terrible local roads.

https://www.chartridgesportsandprestige.co.uk/used...

For sale by a dealer and priced at £5250 which seems reasonable compared to what else is on offer. Has been for sale for a while, 80k, DSG.

Would it be easy to get rid of those wheels and coilovers and put it back to standard spec? I believe the shocks are adjustable so maybe the ride height could be improved.

Anyone know the dealer or the car?

Any thoughts - bearing in mind the distinct lack of standard Red Mk5 DSG Gti's with reasonable mileage.

cheers.

Personally, I'd avoid a modded car.

There are far more standard cars out there, you just need to be patient.

It has coilovers so could be raised to somewhere near standard. I actually really like those wheels, but as suggested above I probably wouldn’t buy a modified model, even though some Are very good cars.
What’s going on with those bumper fixings?

Bumper fixings - I don't know, never seen ones like that before.

I haven't actually seen the car yet, just wanted some opinions before making the journey. In an ideal world I wouldn't buy a modded car, but if it's just a matter of restoring the original shocks and wheels then it may not be too bad.

The sun's out, I haven't got a car and patience alas, is not one of my virtues.

This is the wrong spec for you, but its an idea of MK6 pricing

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

The early ones seem to take an additional hit even when the engine has been completely replaced.

The new engine I can only see as a bonus, 3
Especially with the invoice from vw (So not an eBay engine job)

Sure, I have seen 2009 cars on ebay even cheaper with new engines (source unknown).

I think its a good price for Bi-Xenon, 18" Monza Shadows, RNS510, Dynaudio, DCC, Winter Pack, Sensors and proper tyres!

(Note, I am not the seller!)

OY plate indicates it’s an ex-press car, which means a hard life, sure enough here its sister press car in Autocar...

I appreciate you found one, but that’s not a true statement is it? Unless the one sat on my drive was a press car, which it wasn’t.

Yes it is. O* cars were pretty much all VAG Press cars that covered VW and Audi. This was up until late 2016 when they changed to K* prefixes.

What plate is yours?

OY just means registered in Oxford. It might well be the case (though I doubt it) that all Vag press cars are OY prefixed, it’s not the same as all Vag cars with an OY prefix are press cars.

Nope, O means it's registered in Oxford, the following letter is assigned based on other factors. Pre 2013 it was the location of the DVLA office the car was registered, post 2013 it's the dealership/office/HQ location.

I may also be in the market for a MK5 GTi soon.

I’m in need of something that works as an all rounder. Recently got back into performance motors in the form of another Lexus ISF but sadly it’s not exciting me in the way my old one did so I’m planning to get a sensible all rounder whilst I hopefully save up for something silly.

Prices seem to have risen on cars since I last looked. I’ll be after one with a DSG box and ideally not overly modified. Mileage isn’t that much of a concern as I prefer to buy on condition and history. Will peruse the links on the first page.

Boring sensible question. What sort of fuel economy are people getting in real world use?
