Well my recent R32 purchase has me generally happy but I’m noticing the drivetrain is a bit whiney.

Mainly a noise that’s there in gear, outta gear, clutch up or down, engine on or off, and seems totally tied to speed.

It seems loudest at 58mph ish, then again at 26mph ish, and in low gears (1/2) quite loud like reversing gear whine, at 13mph ish.

It’s pretty quiet all said and done, but having driven or passengered in no 4motion cars of this type, I’m not sure if it’s characteristic or a noise to check out.

Do these cars have a characteristic whine?

I’m planning to do a full fluids/filters on gearbox, transfer box, haldex and rear diff to see what comes out and if it clears things up.

Is this a fairly easy DIY job?

Tempted to let VAG maybe do a full service for the stamp/history then I can just do the non-service oils.

Cheers

Dave

Bump.

I’m now wondering if the ‘whine’ is actually anything to do with the grooved discs?

It has deep grooves discs and red pads. I’ve never had them before so curious if it’s them.
They make a similar pitch noise when applied at various speeds.

May I ask if you still have the noise in 1st and 2nd gear? Or maybe you know what it is or fixed it?

I have the same, and I renewed all the bearings in my mnanual gearbox, sound is still the same. Put another gearbox in, still the same. All diff, haldex fluids replaced, and still the same noise.

I don't know what to do anymore, but it's annoying me for real...

My Mk5 R32 had a droning noise when I first got it, which turned out to be due to poor tyres and alignment. Apparently it's a thing with these cars.

I'm not sure from your description whether it's the same sort of noise, but thought I'd better mention it.

Thanks for your reply The Cardinalsmile

But my tires are new and my alignment is perfect. I self work at the vw dealership as A mechanic for 11 years now.

But I just can't fix this noise, whatever I do. I spend around €1500 till now to fix the problem, but it's still the same. It takes my pleasure away from my R32.

The noise really bugs me, even if I say to myself: it's just A noise.

Do you had A manual? Or please can someone tell me if they can hear it too with A manual R32?
