I'm trying to help my son remotely with his Skoda Octavia MK 1.

I think that either the thermo sensor in the radiator is faulty - or - the fan relay has shorted out.

The radiator fan is running all the time (even with key off - it drained the battery) - even removing the three fuses (1x fan, 2x ABS) on top of the battery doesn't stop it!

Looking online, it would seem that the relays are behind the lower dashboard trim - however I can't seem to work out if it's driver's side or passenger side. (car is right hand drive).

Can anyone tell me which side the relays are on, and what is required to get to them?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT:

Further research suggests that this is the culprit: (and it's located on / in the fan)

Tony- on the Fabia ,I believe ( never seen them), from posts on Briskoda.net, that there are some relays behind the fusebox . On my RHD Fabia, fuse box is on RHS, at door end of dash, behind a removable panel. Might be worth a post on Briscoda.net, in the Octavia section .

That sounds exactly the same as my VW Bora (and probably Golf as well).

After some research, it looks as though a relay like the one I linked to is required and that evidently lives under the bonnet somewhere (near the fan housing I think).

Hello. Sorry to resurrect an old post... Did you manage to fix the problem by replacing the fan control unit? I have the same issue on my venerable '99 Mk1 Octavia.

Thanks
Charlie

Yes, I was lucky to find a new old stock unit from a dealer on Ebay.

Be warned - the aftermarket Chinese ones don't work properly!!

We fitted one, and had all sorts of weird problems.

Thanks ever so much, Tony.

I don't suppose you have any advice on the part number do you? I know it's some variant of 1J0 919 506 but which letter is has on the end I have been unable to find. Mine is a '99 estate with aircon and the 20v AGN 1.8 engine. I thought I'd figured it out when I found something about VINs below a certain number... but even then it seems to leave me with two variants.

I think I'm going to have to take it out before I can order a new one which is a pain. frown

Thanks again
Charlie

I put the part number in my OP - "Radiator Cooling Fan Control Unit Module Relay 1J0919506K"

I have the Skoda technical manual somewhere - if I get time I'll check it's correct - but I'm fairly sure that's what we bought.
