2.0TDI BRT - advice please! are they as bad as claimed?!

Hi all, found a really nice vw sharan 2006 plate for sale, low mileage around 60k but it has the 2.0tdi BRT engine that some claim to be the worst engines ever made by vw with regards to the oil pump balancer etc.
Do the claims ring true? When does this failure usually occur?
KMB parts sell a kit to replace all related components to prevent the supposedly rampant oil pump failure.
If I were to change the oil pump components is the sump easy to get off? Would I have to drop the subframe?
Most online threads refer to audis and I am having difficulty finding any threads online relating specifically to the sharan.
Any info relating to the 2.0tdi's and the sharan would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
