Would anyone happen to know for definite what the engine oil capacity of the 2022 Seat Ateca 2.0tdi engine is please? Sis is being given the runaround by the garage who appear to have overfilled her new car (it’s been shouting at since the service) but denying it it and accusing her when she drove it back to them to clarify. It’s the first service, picked up the car new in March this year. banghead

What does it say in the handbook ? They seem to vary from make and model, anywhere between 3.8 and 5 litres.

Nothing in the handbook or manual apparently. No amounts only grade listed. Engine bay same. I can turn up various figures online but no definitive answer hence asking here in case anyone can point me to the right place.

Would finding out help? You still won't know how much the garage has put in.

If it's showing a warning she could call SEAT Assist, but they may want to recover the car back to the garage and it's not a good time of year to be getting involved with stuff like that.

Does the invoice show qty and type of oil used?

The quantity might vary depending on engine power and whether it's got 4Motion. I think at it's most basic the 2 litre TDi takes 4.7 litres. It's possible it might have changed recently as I think they now use 0W20 (VW508 or 509) oil.

We have the amount on the job sheet, and telephone conversations are doubling down on that amount. It is the DSG 4drive.
She has been back twice, first time signed off and told to drive away again. Second time they’ve accused her of overfilling it, and even went through things in the car to find a (unopened) bottle of top up oil (she always keeps some in case) and then told her not to overfill it given ‘we’ve seen the oil in the boot’.

Opie oils sometimes gives the fill quantity as does euro ar parts. We use Autodata at work - i'm off now until January otherwise i would have checked,

Has it been drastically over filled ? whats the issues ?

Car keeps having a fit, throwing lights, hence going back in. They’ve put 5.5l in.

My concern is they seem to be limbering up to something. Initially they accused her of overfilling, when she said she hadn’t put any in this second time they’ve had the car in they’ve gone through a bag in the boot to find a new bottle of oil to once again accuse her. Cynic in me feels like subsequent warranty issues might be a problem.

I wouldn’t put too much store by that - the sheet is probably auto-completed.

Has ‘signed’ auto-corrected from siphoned?

If so, is she saying the oil level has increased again? That would be alarming.

No, signed. As in just kinda sent away… nothing was done. She told them there was too much oil, technician said he was happy and sent her away.

I’m using the 5.5l figure as that’s what they keep throwing at her, both written on the sheet and over the phone. She wasn’t bothered initially, just wanted the car sorting out. But their tone seems to have shifted and they’re very much laying the blame at her door. She simply wants the car to be where it should be.

I would have guessed no more than 4.8 litres but does this help?

Yes we think 4.6 odd, too. I’m guessing they’ve overfilled it. Thanks very much.

Is it causing any issues though ? Where does it sit on the dipstick ?

Some Golfs are 3.8 litres, some are 4.3, the Audi A3 with the same engine is 5.0 litres. If its not causing any isues and the dealer says the right quantity is in there then go with that

If its overfilled and they won't accept it - then go to another garage, get them to drain the oil and tell you want comes out., The refill it with the correct amount of oil. Always go by the dipstick (if it has one) and not the quantity of oil the book says.

...and, not that I've found it makes much difference vs stone cold on wife's diesel Tiguan, but check the oil level when hot, a couple of mins after turning the engine off.

It can be quite tricky to tell the level on the dipstick if you dip it multiple times as the tube gets full of oil.

I'm also unclear what the issue is here - is it throwing up warnings and the dealer is blaming her for over-filling the oil?
Or is she just concerned it's been over-filled? If the dealer is saying the level is OK then are they investigating the warning lights?

Throwing up warnings and dealer blaming her for overfilling. We are going by what’s on the dipstick, which is over the max. At the moment they’re not investigating, I just wanted to see if we could locate what the amount should be is all, for future discussions with the garage. But yes, I think she’s going to go elsewhere to get rectified.

Thanks everyone.

Just ram home the fact no one topped up the oil after the service and shouldn't have needed to really if they had done their job properly.
This is very basic stuff even the main dealer chimps should be able to handle.

One thing you're up against here is that SEAT dealers seem to be completely useless - we've tried two and and beyond that, they're pretty thin on the ground so there isn't much choice. It comes up regularly on SEAT forums.

Of course from the dealers side, many customers are idiots too. My son-in-law, who is reasonably practical person but seems to have a blank on anything car related, saw the oil can which is the service reminder on daughter's car, so he stuck a litre of oil in the engine!

I just looked at an old service invoice for wife's Tiguan and it does show 4.7 litres - but I'd caution against taking that figure as also relating to your sister's car. You could try Tweeting SEAT UK and asking them - they would probably need the VIN. Having said that, they've told me completely the wrong thing on service intervals for Haldex and DSG. In another query they completely responded using the Audi brand, rather than SEAT.

Just to update…

Sis went to HQ - who after a fairly long amount of time on hold came back to report it should be 5.3l. They think this is enough over to ping the sensor on the car.

She went back to the garage, who showed her their system saying 5.5 for her car, so someone is wrong somewhere. However they did then remove 1l and add the required amount. Not sure why that way around but given they came to quote amounts this time and tell her they’d done it it likely means they hadn’t removed any before, despite patting her on the head and sending her away multiple times telling her that she was clearly wrong. rolleyes

Anyway, she will always stick to what the dipstick says regardless. So far no problems - we wait to see if it pings again, but she has at least registered it so they’re aware of the issue.

If this is the same engine as the 2.0tdi 150bhp Skoda Superb, then 5.5 litres is correct. I had a similar long discussion with my local garage after they told me they charged me for 5.5l and I didn't believe it was as much. That was 18 months ago, and I've since had another local garage do the latest service and they too advised me beforehand that it takes 5.5l.
