Hi all,

Just wondering if I can get people's opinions on what these are like to drive. Not too bothered about cruising on motorway as not going to be doing much of that this year but am interested in these cause they seem good value £7000ish with 40k miles 2001, like the idea of a v6 and also the fact that its not front drive only as may take it to a very occasional (1/2 per year) track day.

Anyway... any opinions would be greatly apreciated! Also are they the equivilent of the modern R32?

I had one for a year or so. It's a very nice car with a very smooth V6 and willing - if not all that outrageous - performance. If you're looking at a car for "enthusiastic" driving (and esp. for track days), make sure you get one with the sports suspension set-up as the standard suspension is way too soft. The R32 is the one for you if you want a more hardcore driving experience, but prices are much higher.

Lots of owners report recurring problems with air flow meters, ignition coils and other gremlins, too, so bear in mind that you might have a few niggles. Economy is in the 25mpg region on A/B roads, less if you push it.

Other than that - buy one.

I've had 2 over the past 60k miles & 4 years.
If you want to go on track they need a lot of suspension work to make them fun.
They're fwd with drive transferred only when the fronts slip so not permanent 4wd.

In all, a great car cruiser but it's certainly not a sports car.

Great cars i had one for 3-4 years and 100,000 kms no problems at all apart from expensive servicing by VAG

I agree they are good value. We have had more niggles than I was expecting (2 x MAF sensors, plug leads, CD changer and a few strange electrical gremlins).
I reckon the V6 is best regarded as a brisk comfy cruiser than a sharp handling hot hatch. You soon make use of the traction and it is good in the wet. The engine makes it nice to drive as its smooth, flexible and has a nice top end. The spec is usually pretty good as well. Its a bit soft but at less then half the price of an R32 they make a decent all rounder.

I ran one of these for about 12 months and there was never a bother on it. Had a 3-door which was a bit hard to sell on - everyone wanted 5 doors.

Couldn't agree more about the previous suspension comments it was too soft to go round corners but yet it didn't seem able to drive over a speed bump either. It was the worst of both worlds! If I had kept it I was going to get the suspension sorted.

It was quite thirsty too...
