As the 16v came with 210bhp from the factory this would seem to be the more 'sensible' option for the OP who had mentioned his thirst for power.
Who wrote this then?

As to whats stopping me, money!

Wedding in the next 6 months and my Mk2 16v could really do with a respray and an ABF!

I'm in the same boat sadly frown However I have acompany car coming my way in the next few months so the money I save on fuel can pay for power and paint!

My valver has been a little sluggish lately, fortunately I have a friend who reckons he can get it storming again with some proper setup work. I drove another standard valver he setup on Sunday and it left mine for dust! Taken off the stainless zorst and Stroeve induction kit (for sale if you're interested) simply because they were a bit loud for a daily drive.

Once we've got mine running absolutely bang on will see what I fancy for future upgrades, R32 or supercharged ABF could be fun wink

They do benefit from a good set up. Mine seems pretty strong at the mo, much to the annoyance of one of my mates who has one with a four branch, full stainless and TSR set up - yet mine still pulled away, standard apart from a K & N panel filter.

Id love a G60 and will own one one day. Im going to get the valver painted over winter and maybe put a 2.0l bottom end on.

Thought Id sneak a quick pic on:

Looks quite tidy that smile

I was hunting parts to run an ABF on megasquirt but have just accepted a job offer from an Audi dealer, so as soon as my 3 month probation there is up I can take my pick of the A3/4 range as a daily drive. This leaves me free to do something silly with the Golf!

That wasn't a recommendation merely an observation. And if you'd read further on you would have read that I had added (for the second time) that it wouldn't be my choice for daily wheels. Neither 8v or 16v would.

16v would be my choice for a daily, but maybe I'm biased wink

G60 could well prove a financial burden to put big miles on, the temptation to extract more power is just too great.

Thanks for all the valuable input guys.
Even the little tussle between the few people here on this post was mildly entertaining wink
The good news is that I have access to full workshop facilities here in Germany, including two ex-Wolfsburg technicians, a steady state flow bench and various test rigs.
I could easily rebuild the G60 charger for a pittance and probably improve it slightly- by smoothing out the casting, RS bearings etc etc. I design and develop inlet ports- and help turbo charger compressor matching- for OEMs so this will be straight forward.
I've heard good things about Darren at G werks in the UK and spoke to him yesterday. It hardly seems worth taking the G lader there with access to all this.
I may even get a second G lader to play around with.
I won't be putting a massive mileage on the car.

We looked over some of the mods the after market do- generally quite good the one I expected to be silly but was pleasantly suprised by, was the SNS 'anti lag', which I have never tested but I liked the write up on their website - but the one that is most silly IMO and in the opinion of some of the ex VW engineers I work with- is stopping the part load boost recirculation. This is NOT an emissions device and is a fuel economy feature. It's a Bypass. THere is NO BENEFIT to performance in doing away with this. No, part load 'throttle response' advantages or any other such guff i hear on boards. And before I start hearing 'seat of the dyno stories'-DON'T. When I was involved in developing the Jaguar XJR and XKR stuff- we put a bypass there for part load for a good reason.[ sorry for being so defensive, but I'm somewhat sick of having to argue with people on other boards about chip-tuning and other after market mods]

Sounds like maintaing the charger isn't going to be an issue then! Tuned G-Laders sound cool too.

Now get out there and buy one!

Hi mate, everything seems to be fine!
I replaced the broken exhaust rubber doughnuts with extra cable ties when I got home.
I'll get new ones today.
Now I've 'won' a Fiat Punto 1.2 (its a 2004 model so not a Grande Punto) with only 20,000 kms on it, I'll be sad to lay up the G60 frown

Less than that even!
Now, do I store the G60 and drive the underpowered Punto for a bit (but it's NEW so it MUST be a better and faster car-right rolleyes) or sell the Punto straight away? Or put another way, will I get more money selling the Punto here in Germany before X-mas or closer to Spring?

You have a choice of a G60 or a snotty little Punto.

Do you really really need to ask???

Yes but what you rather drive in winter and get sprayed in salt? Your G60 pride and Joy or a Newish Punto?

I continue to find the main dealers in Germany rude and obtrusive- when looking for specific parts for either my E21 or G60- saying derrogatory and tiresome comments about the car being old (and stating the bloody obvious)- when I'm looking for a simple part , such as a brake disc or ABS sensor or even an exhaust rubber hanger. rolleyes
Talking to a few others- and from the experiences in the US and UK this is a VERY GERMAN thing. Do these narrow minded conformist tts have any soul? Any passion? Is this Lemingitis contagious?

  • not intended to offend any German individuals that think for themselves and have a mind of their own and indeed a soul wink*

Here's a scenario:
  • buy winter tyres for the Punt, not the Golf
  • get dry storage for the Golf
  • dereg the Golf and store it
  • victimise the Punt this winter
  • rereg the Golf in April
  • sell the Punt in April
  • hoon the Golf and enjoy the dry days without salt on the road
  • rereg Golf earlier when the Punt makes you depressive biggrin

I just jetwash the crud out from under my arches and sills - not a spec of rust on mine after nearly 160,000 miles.

Would be very different for a minter/show car though. Old Golfs is made of proper metal smile
