New 'to me' Passat

Hi
Have just got a nice older (98) Passat. Great car in nice condition concidering age and miles.
As I am new to this model, are there any problems to look out for?
Seems to have a knocking noise from front drivers suspension on very rough potholes.
Also noted on another post that their clutch bite is high up. So is mine however, its working perfectly. I always thought a clutch on its way out tended to bite right down at the floor. Is this a VW thing?
