My daughter has a VW Golf Mk4 2.0L GTI.

She has been quoted the following prices:

Full Service: £270 inc Parts Labour and VAT
Cam Belt Change: £176.25 inc Parts Labour and VAT

Does this ring true - It was more than that 20 years ago when I had a Mk1 GTI !!!

Have an Audi but they sound OK to me. Cheap for a timing belt change compared to my A4 - they usually want at least £400-500.

Just paid £200+VAT on my Dads 1.6 Bora (pretty much the same work involved).
However, that included a waterpump change too (worth doing while they're doing the cambelt and not expensive).

Used an local independent.

The full service sounds expensive imo. Shouldn't be more than £200 unless its at a main dealer.

Isn't it the old 8v donk in those things?

That would explain the belt price, doddle to swap on that engine.

Sounds cheap to me, Im.

270 quid is about 4 farthings and a thrippeny bit in your day...

Yip, just now.

My wife's Golf comes in it at 350-500 a year from the local VW dealer.

Mk1's were tuppence 'a'penny and a book of green-shield stamps...

I even think they have mis quoted (too cheap), We couldn't do the cam belt at that price, would charge 3 hours + parts, About £240 labour without any parts.

Service at £270 is exactly what we would charge for equivalent A3, so thats bang on. sorry

Yes it is an old engine design but in the mkiv the side engine mount needs to be taken off before the belts (cam and aux) can come off - pants design. Make sure they new stretch bolts bolts when re-fixing the engine mount. If they don't, the gengine drops down as the bolts come back out again! Happens alot and normally after the mechanic has said 'oh yeah VW say you should but you don't need to.' For the sake of £3 worth of bolts as well. Some dealers have been guilty of not re-newing them to.

Definately change the water pump at the same time. All the belts and engine mount need to come off to do it so it makes sense to do it and re-new the coolant. And don't let them use a VW item with the plastic impella - they're shite. Go to GSF and get a brass impella'd item (costs about the same) and get them fit that instead. If they refuse then go to an independant garage and get all the work done there instead. There are plenty in Horsham area. VW were too pig-headed to revert from the plastic to brass, even after all the problems with the plastic impellas disintergrating (which leads to over heating problems and people posting that their cars temperature guage is showing overheating but hasn't lost any coolant so they drove on and the the engine goes boom). VW choose instead to offer an extended warranty (2-years) but as they start to fail after 4 years this is just lip service. Brass impella'd ones don't fail so don't need to be replaced.

Not sure what the OP is trying to say about the prices. Are they too high, too low? But the service price is in line with my local dealer, although the cambelt change is way off. The kit alone (belts, tensioner) is £40 plus the stretch bolts and the water pump. I've had it done in two-hours but that would still be £150 odd labour at a dealer.

Make sure that quote includes: water pump, tensioners, vat. Many dealers quote half the job.

VW dealers are now price matching local garages for regular servicing (apparently) http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/pricepromise so maybe dealers have also cut their prices in a pre-emptive strike!

Local dealer (Keiths in Aylesbury so no use to you) was doing £99 promotion on basic service not too long ago. Anything more than that for an oil change is taking the p*** really, no matter how shiny your showroom is.
