Hi ppl, i have an a4 tdi quattro sport which i bought 2 months ago, but compared to my bora tdi that i used to have, it lets out black smoke every time i put my foot down. i know its normal for these cars but, its actually more than normal. firstly, ive put a cleaning formula called FORTE into my diesel tank and filled with diesel. then ive changed the oil (manufac. spec), also changed the oil and air filter. is there anything anyone can suggest???

it just means it's not been driven hard to clear out the exhaust

my father's A4 is the same - he never goes over 3k rpm so when I borrow it there's loads of smoke

my A3 however gets driven on the door handles everywhere and there's never a trace smile

ps - not too sure of the additive benefits

how hard do you drive it?

take it for a good 20 mins hard drive at 4k rpm and see if it's the same

Black smoke

This is normally due to an air to fuel ratio imbalance, either the fuel system is delivering too much fuel into the engine or there is not enough clean air (oxygen).

A few things to look for :

* Faulty injectors (injectors need attention at about 100k to 120k miles)
* Faulty injector pump
* Dirty air cleaner
* Turbocharger or intercooler faulty
* Problems within cylinder head, valves clogged up due to faulty EGR

I am on my third Audi A4 Sport / S Line Tdi and I find the same as you but I believe it is down to the vehicle, I do not go above 3000 revs therefore I do get a lot of black smoke especiallly at night when I pull away from lights etc.
My friend who works for Audi says it is not a problem and has looked at it as he thought at first it might be over fuelling but it is not, I think it's just a case of smelly diesels, and its a sign of the times.

If is a pre PD engine check the pump timing. We see loads of cars that have had the cam belt changed using blobs of paint as markers, not the correct pins. Also the pump timing can be checked with vag com.

If its a PD engine the EGR valves can give problems.

That is brilliant, I would expect mine to be the same on a rolling road.
