Hi there. Just a thought at the mo, but has anyone got insurance on a MK1 or Mk2 Golf GTI at the tender age of 18/19? Im still not driving for another 9 days, however, in 18 months or 2 years time, Id possibly like to upgrade (or downgrade or however you want to see it) to an MK1 or 2 GTI. Any ideas on quotes? Always appreciated old GTI's, and thought buy one now while I can before I can't affford it at all. Many thanks in advance, Ollie smile

If you're planning on getting a minter of a classic, I'd garage it for the first year or so, or wait another year. The likelyhood of you making mistakes, however small - kerbing an alloy, clip the bumper on a revers park. It will dishearten you such that driving is not a pleasure.

I wish I had got a daily snotter to learn and make mistakes in.

If you are dead set on one, check confused.com, adrian flux, a-plan (not sure what they're like for <20 year olds. Bell/Elephant were good with my first car.

When you go looking, there'll be a lot or tired old ones, don't worry about them, hang on for a nice one. Good luck looking.

When i was 19 i had a Mk GTI 8v. Insurance was 900fc with lowered sus alloys and a cam. That was 7years ago and i'm guessing i was lucky. So all in all not a very helpfull response.

Ring HIC. They specialise in VAG insurance. Or....make sure the car is 1989 at the youngest and try to get it on a classic policy

I have always found the relevant clubs for specialist cars usually have an insurance company who do a good deal. worth checking club gti etc. Mk1 gti campaign in black was my first car at 19, £750fc 10 years ago. Took me 8 months to find the car and i would have another one tomorow! Take your time and find a nice original one (if you can!!!!).

Tis currently Brentacre who offer discounts to most of the clubs, the chaps there know the cars as well and are sympathetic to modifications.
