Please someone help me. I own a 98 Golf Gti Turbo. The problem is sometimes when i drive i put my foot on the accelerator and the car hesitates to pull then suddenly goes. Also when i break the idle drops right down and the car nearly stalls. Also my spark plugs get dirty very quickly and there is a smell of unburnt fuel when i drive. Maybe running rich? Iv replaced the MAF sensor, air temp sensor, cleaned the plugs, cleaned the throttle body and fitted a new dump valve. Yet the problem still occurs. Any help will be much appreciated. Thankyou

Not sure tbh but not too cheap...try and find another friendly 1.8t owner and swap them to make sure 1st.

My mum had exactly the same problem on her 98 GTI and it was the MAF meter / sensor. Replaced in about 15 mins for about £35 at her local VAG dealer and it drives like new now. Not 100% guaranteed that's it, but worth a shot.

The MKIV suffers with a few different sensors failing which includes the Lambda sensors. Get your car to a decent VAG specialist (NOT STEALER!) and they should be able to read the fault codes and offer advice from there.

Best Regards

Check all of the hoses around the engine. The prime ones to check are the one from the top of the dump valve, the fat hose from the cam cover, and the medium fat hose from UNDERNEATH the intake manifold. It is a rubber pipe with 2 90deg bends in it which splits on the inside of the bend. I only found out about it when I took it to Jabba Sport. New one is about 20quid

Also a possible candidate for the hesitation is a coolant temperature sensor - 20quid.
