I've had a few of these in my younger days!! Cracking little cars.

Check the fuel filler neck carefully, reach up into the wheel arch and feel for any rust holes, very common and will let muck into the fuel tank, also very difficult and expensive to get replacement ones.

Also check the bulkhead where the clutch cable goes through, the mount often pulls through and renders the clutch inop, with that sort of mileage it should of happened and been sorted by now.

Normal VW rust around leading edge of bonnet and wheel arches, rears worst. Some panels are becoming very difficult to get now.

Water leaks into boot are normally rear lights and don't always indicate a crashed car.
