Wasn't "Black Edition" only available later? 18" wheels are perfect for an everyday car - The extra sidewall height gives a bit more compliance so copes with stty road surfaces better.

ADS options can be checked via the MMI screen. It might not even have dynamic steering, as you can order ADS by itself...

Good spot on the HHA smile
Can't recall when BE became available - possibly 2010. Tints were available on their own as a factory option, but seeing them on a non-BE would make me want to check that they're factory fit and not a crappy film.

I thought on the early cars (pre-8.5) you could only spec ADS buttons with one of the steering/damping/diff options? Facelift I think you can spec as there's a selectable exhaust mode as well as engine/gearbox.

I don't have the ADS and I've never felt I've missed out, for me the car is a sensible family car - which when I'm on my own I can 'give it the beans' and enjoy a bit of power. If I was bothered about out and out driving I'd seek a ADS + sports diff spec model........or more likely - a 335i/another car.

the S4 is just an awesome all-round package.

The B&O is v good, you always think 'ohh its turned up to max now, this is good' then realize it will go alot louder if you want it to!

I now get my car professionally detailed annually and then wash & wax it myself every 2-3 weeks, which really helps keep it looking great. I'd have gone for grey if I could have found the right car.
As for wheels look on ebay, I just picked up some 19's (Le Mans stlye) from an A4 for £500 with excellent tyres, usually they go from £500-750 I'd say. The segments are VERY sexy, especially on the Avants, but they go for a bit more money and are hard to find in the right offset. I sold my 18's for £260 on ebay, which was a bit gutting as they had 2 new tyres.

You could check the water pump has been done (google audi s4 water pump) - but I'd imagine they all have as it was an early identified fault.

I love the segment alloys aka potato peelers - make sure you don't buy some off an A/S5 as they're the wrong offset!

ADS helps resale, so any of the options will help it shift quicker when you want to move it on. Surprising number of examples have a large expanse of empty space where all the buttons can go on the centre console!

Re HHA mentioned above... I always thought this was a bit of a misnomer.

Without HHA, the car holds on a hill anyway and only releases when it has enough traction so that you won't roll backwards. HHA (as far as I know) just puts the handbrake on automatically when you stop.

So HHA should be renamed "automatic handbrake putting on assist"!!

The gearbox does prevent rolling if it's an auto, but not a manual. Even then the auto setup isn't perfect on steep slopes.

HHA doesn't apply the handbrake, it applies the footbrake via the ABS module so operates quicker and more gently than the handbrake and means you can come to a halt and take your foot off the brake completely and the car won't move, auto or manual. The button is there to disable it so you can manouver more easily when parking

I've recently bought a D4 A8 with the same 3.0 Tfsi engine in as the B8 S4. I'm going to change the spark plugs soon. Are the NGK-PFR7S8EG the correct ones to use?

Looks like it - Audi part number for both is 101 905 611G for models after 10/1/11. Lists that part for our S5 and engine codes CAKA and CCBA. For an A8 it lists these for any of: CGWA, CGXC, CMDA, CGWD, CTUB. Only one it isn't suitable for is CPAA engine code.

I haven't cross-referenced the NGK part number

Well yesterday went well and I'm the proud owner of a B8 S4 Avant.

The very one in the advert I posted on the last page. Thanks a lot for your help all, gave me something to think about and look out for on the car when I went to see it.

Unfortunately the paint work is pretty dire, as you all said it might be being black, I think the front and rear bumper may need a spray and the rest a good detail.

However I’m loving the drive, its got enough poke to keep me interested and the ADU is good fun, a noticeable difference between dynamic and auto.

What’s the best owners club for UK based S4 owners?

Many congrats on the new motor smile

There's not many specialist forums/clubs for the B8 platform - some on AudiSRS which is mainly B5 owners who have moved on.

The A5oc has lots of useful info, most of which carries across to all the B8 platform vehicles.

Where are you based? I know a VERY good detailer who is very reasonable. I use him annually for a deep clean/detail - then wash and wax myself. NEVER used a car wash (inc hand wash ones).

Excellent! What did the ADS spec turn out to be? (see what options are available in 'individual' setup of ADS...)

I'd be interested to know where he covers too - Surrey/W Sussex borders and struggling to get anyone prepared to look at ours who isn't booked 6 months ahead....

Was considering a decent correction detail and ceramic coating, but that ideally requires a temperature controlled environment to apply

This is the guy
https://www.facebook.com/DetailedCarCleaning/?fref...

He covers Essex mainly, not sure how far he travels, I think he has done trips when he has had multiple clients in one area.

He is around £120-150 for a full days work inc all products, he really knows his stuff. Last year when I got the car he gave it a full detail, so clay, machine polish, paint correction and wax. This year he said it's not a good idea to machine polish again and simply did a 'gloss polish' after a clay, then waxed etc which took less time. The paintwork is SO nice after, feels really protected.

Its v easy to wash now and I try and wax when I can to layer up the protection. He is really passionate about his work and does alot of research/testing so that what he uses on your car is the right product.

You can use my name when contacting him, he is v busy of course given the low pricing and the fact he gets more work out of every new customer.

Cheers Dan, ive messaged the detailer and he seems helpful and good value, a bit of a journey but will try and book in with him.

you got any befroe/after pics?

Phil, I'll check out that forum, thanks.

So ive been looking at 19" segments on ebay, will the ones from a Q3 fit?

Or do they have to be from a S4/S5?

What do you think my 18's are worth? A couple of small dinks but tyes are great and lots of life left.

The offset is likely to vary and tyre sizes will probably be wrong too. Centre bore can vary by year/model so definitely advisable to stick to S4 sourced examples. Worth looking on German ebay based on a part number search as there's often full sets available with decent tyres.

Part number you're looking for is 8K0601025AK which are 8.5x19 ET43 5x112mm

Q3 wheels 'might' work as they're ET36 so will stick out 7mm further than the stock S4 option so will fill the arches nicely BUT you need to check they're the same centre bore.

What's the general opinion on tyres? My Contis are nearing the end of their life and have become tram linings hateful things.

I've run Michelin Super Sports before and had a lot of love for them, but that was on my old M135i

Goodyear F1 on mine in the 255/35/19 size.

Much better than the continental tyres fitted at the factory. They never felt grippy and tramlined like crazy,

We run Mich Super Sports on both S cars with happy results - bizarrely the design seems to result in much longer tyre life if you do a lot of urban driving on larger wheel sizes (both cars are on 20s).

I have heard good reports of the latest Pirelli P-zero in outright performance terms, but not heard about longevity.
