Is the starter motor also from the same belt?
If so, probably not aux belt as the car started fine and was able to limp home with engine temps in the norm.

Errr.... Starter motor isn't connected to any belt. It's usually a toothed drive off the rim of the flywheel.

However, the alternator and water pump are off the same belt, so I'd expect the car to run hot and/or the alternator warning light to come on.

It's easy to check as the belt is directly at the front of the engine. Don't confuse with the supercharger drive belt, though.

Apologies, alternator is what I was meaning to type, don't know why I put starter motor. I was supposed to say the battery was fine when I started the car again with no dashboard warning lights (which would have come up if the alternator was not operating).

Booking the car in to a garage for them to look at as I don't have the space, time or tools to give this a proper look at myself.

Thanks for the replies all.

Hey all,

I may have mentioned this a long time ago but I probably need to get it sorted as I might sell the car in the coming year.

So my key doesn't really release like it should, i.e you should just switch the car off- wait 2 secs and easily pull the key out. However mine never releases, I have a knack for it which is to press and quickly remove it in one movement and its always worked for me - but anyone else (garages etc) can never get the key out.

I raised it with a specialist and they said it's likely a new ignition slot is needed (approx £90 for the part) but ONLY audi can code it. I emailed my local Audi garage and they never replied.

Anyone has this issue and how did you fix it, what was the cost?

Thanks
Dan

There was a recall on the key release way back, I had it replaced under warranty on my first of my three A5’s. Have you phoned the dealer? They may be low on staff due to COVID...

Thanks for the replies all re the key, will call the dealer when I can as not had much luck with local specialists - one offered to take a look for a £50 diagnostic fee........utterly pointless as I know exactly what the problem is!

Dr G are you a trader/dealer? Just on your last comment about not keeping it.

My S4 I just sold was a manual with all the trimmings (sport diff etc) . Not avant though. Oh and it was here in Holland smile

Have a horrid feeling it will be the last new manual I every buy.

3 years since Audi have sold any performance model with a manual. Sad but inevitable.

No plans to change, at the moment. It's still ticking all the boxes and under 45K miles thanks to the last year frown

Not uncommon with these; plenty of people keep them for a long while. Just bought one from an owner of 11 years part exchanging it for another one.

There still isn't a better 'jack of all trades' car.
