1.4 TSi 180bhp DSG cars - real world mpg?

My company hack is a 2011 Polo GTI, I drive fairly enthusiastically being such a fun car to drive, and I average around 37 mpg most days, 30 if driven really hard.

On an easy 75 mph motorway cruise I get around 45 mpg.

The car I'm looking at is 3 years old with 28k and will come from year's warranty. It's going to be used for a commute of about 18 miles each way on mainly A roads. It's going to be replacing a Lexus IS200 so there isn't much that could have worse fuel economy!

Yes, £2k worth of engine work needed this year on an older 1.4 TSI. So many things that seem to go wrong with these particularly the early cars. Its comical really that they can have quite so many expensive faults. The DSG 'box is also a ticking timebomb.

Awesome cars when they work but you don't want to be caught out when they go wrong. You should be Ok but keep an eye on the oil consumption, listen out for any strange noises at startup and it might be worth renewing the warranty in a years time.

Ah right, that's interesting. Although it would have a 1 year warranty it's after that period that worries me! I would really be planning on keeping the car for 4 years so I don't want something that is going to go bang as soon as I have to foot the bills...

I replied to this thread 3 years ago about my experience with a 2007 Golf GT 170TSI, which I have owned from new. It is now coming up to 7 years old with almost 130,000 miles on the clock. I would like to say that it has been trouble free, but the last 6 months have been quite expensive. The timing chain stretched and needed replacing which, together with chain tensioner, cost around £700. I then lost supercharger boost and needed the waterpump/supercharger clutch replacing at a cost of around £400. Finally, the DSC module failed and was replaced at a cost of around £200. Together with buying winter tyres/wheels I have invested close to £2k on non-routine items, so I now expect it to run for another 7 years (say 250,000 miles!!!!!). The good news is that it is running as good as new and the trip computer is showing an average of just over 40mpg.

My Fabia VRS seems to be averaging 36mpg , I do drive it fairly hard though

I'v got the 150 Ibiza, which is pretty much the same figures I think.

I drive about 6 miles to work and don't drive eco and I'm normally on average 29/30 when I get there.

So long distance its probably not far off the quoted 45.
