VW passat 1999elctric windows fault
Discussion
Just bought a VW passat 1.8 turbo. The owner told me the electric windows dont work on it and that it is a common fault? What would I need to buy to fix the problem. Any links to ebay or such would be helpful.
I take delivery of the car this week some time so cant answer specific questions to the car yet.
Cheers Brian

Depends what the specific problem is. There is a common fault where the window drops down into the door. This needs a fix to the regulator. Info here:

The other problem if it doesn't move at all when you press the button is the wiring loom between the door and the main chasis can become chaffed. Pull back the rubber boot and inspect the wires.
Otheriwse when you get the car post back with more specific info as to the prob.

Yes they do, it is called the convience control module. It is under the front passenger footwell carpet. It gets soaked when the plenum chamber doesn't drain and you get all kinds of problems.
If it is just that the windows don't work then I doubt it is this. When the CCU gets wet, the windows wind down on their own, the hazzard lights glow, the alarm goes off etc.
Probably just a fuse as you say.

This - chafed wires in the door shuts very common on these Passats.http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t...

Got the car now. the windows will go down when i unlock the door and hold the key in the unlock position and then the windows close when i hold it in the lock position. I would say that the fuses are ok and relays. The windows wont go up or down with the switches? Is this the CCM? Where is it? how do i get to it.
Also the rear drivers sdie window wont go up or doen with the key in the lock. I think its come of the rail as when it goes up or down it hits the bottom o the window. Is it an easy fix?
Im use to vauxhalls so complete novice to VW as all the ones ive had have never broke. This is why i have bought the passat.
Cheers Brian

CCM is in the passenger side footwell just in front of the front seat. You have to peel the carpet back to get to it (which is easier said than done!). Remove the plastic kick plate from down beside the passenger's feet (just in front of the door) & then you should be able to pull the edge of the carpet out from underneath the sill trim. Also the rear drivers sdie window wont go up or doen with the key in the lock. Does this sound right for the problems do you think?
Have a look at the CCM & examine all the cables leading to it. Any sign of water & it might well be your issue. Check all the door shuts as well for worn cables & after that I'd be heading to someone who can read the fault codes off the car for you. If you have a laptop you can get a cable & a basic copy of VAG.com off e-bay for not too much which should allow you to read the codes yourself (and clear errors).Passat doors are a bit of a job to get into. If you have a look at the forums at www.passatworld.com , there is a lot of knowledge & information over there.
Ok so took the car for first test drive today. The following didnt work.
Remote central locking
electric windows
speedo
mileage counter
rev counter
fuel guage (fuel light works)
engine temp guage
trip computer
interior light
are these all controlled by the ccm? or do i have bigger problems?
The funny thing is i thought i would pull up the carpet to get the part number off the old one only to find there isnt one there. Provoius owner must have taken it out and not replaced it so im going to have to find out the part number for it from VW.

I'm not sure all of that is controlled by the CCM - but the locking, windows & lights definitly are.

Yeah all thats there is a blue and brown connector
Looks like you have been tucked up quite badly then. CCM is a very expensive part to replace. I'd go so far as to say its also somewhat core to the operation of the vehicle. No way the PO didn;t know that had been taken out. I'd be having "a word" even if it gets you nowhere.
Got a year 2000 Passat, ECU has gone senile.
Radio turns on randomly.
Intermittent wipe intermittently works, rain sensors don't.
Climate control considers 'LO' to mean full heat always.
Alarm triggers randomly.
'Oil sensor warning'
'Brake pad check light'
'Service needed in xxx miles' changes every day, up sometimes and down the next or doesn't even appear for weeks at a time.
On the plus side windows and locking work perfectly, never fails to start and go's surprisingly well.
All at only 140k miles. Car itself still drives as it should and better than many much newer and lower miles ones.
In fact i've been actively looking to replace it for around 3 years and almost every car i've driven up to £5k has felt worse to drive.

Unfortunatly i bought the car as spares or repairs as it had a ccm fault and the exhaust missing. He said he bought the car about a year ago but never used it.
Doubt im ever going to find out the part number unless i contact VW and dont think they will ever tell me. My brother in law is the service manager at Skoda and he said he doubts he will be able to find out.
The only other thing is to find ones that have come off the same model car / year and hope for the best? Will be very costly i expect as whats the chances of finding the righton irst time.

Don't see why your BiL shouldn't be able to find the part number . All the VAG group part systems are linked - all he should need is your chassis number. There are also quite a few SH parts sellers who are quite good with this stuff. Ask on Passatworld - someone will probably know what different versions of the CCM there were.Doubt im ever going to find out the part number unless i contact VW and dont think they will ever tell me. Cant get the part number for the original CCM. The data base Skoda use cant pick up the VW part number or some reason. The supplier his skoda dealership use wouldnt give me the part number only that they could supply one for £150 which would be guarenteed to work.
I have bought one form my local scrappy. £10 Bargain. It doesnt work on my car managed to try 2 different ones before i paid for this one. Was thinking is there a way of reprograming them?
i.e a lead to connect the car to my computer them a program that i can use to reprogram it? I have been told this might be possible?
Cheers Brian

I doubt it - you need the right part really. VW dealer really ought to be able to tell you the part number.I have bought one form my local scrappy. £10 Bargain. It doesnt work on my car managed to try 2 different ones before i paid for this one. Was thinking is there a way of reprograming them?
