I honestly think that the thing that holds prices down is the fact that there is quite a bit of 'tat' out there that are seemingly demanding high prices, and this does hold back sales of 'good' cars. It's ok to ask a price for a car but unless it's sold at that price it's worthless, and some hang around for a long time. If we're honest there are some great cars out there along with 'ok' cars and some that can only be described as basket cases. Price accordingly it will sell, otherwise it wont.

I guess that's true, whereas I imagine most Cobra kits have been meticulously looked after and certainly will not have rotten outriggers!

Hmmm, the Elephant in the room for me for a long time has been:

For many purists the only Griff to have is a pre-cat due to possessing one of the best sound tracks ever to grace a car. Also it has a more 'natural' way of putting the power down, ie not overwhelming the light short chassis with such a huge slug of torque as with the 500

The fact that the 4.3 and above has similar performance and is Much rarer raises the question of when the cognoscenti opinion starts to shift in favour of the pre-cat (whereas presently, the 500 appears wildly over valued / 400s undervalued)

Personally, I believe that the 430 and above pre-cats will soon switch places with the 500 value wise, if only because they are much rarer (the sound and similar performance making the demand outstrip supply far more within a couple of yrs)

No offence intended to 500 guys - I test drove near new examples of both back to back in the 90s - despite the 430 throttle linkage breaking requiring trailering back it gave me an ear to ear smile from the moment it powered up - i took the 500 back with none of the excitement

Also one of the original TVR engine tuners, and very highly respected in the field to this day (John Eales) commented that the 430 is the purest and most optimal capacity for the Rover V8 - when asked about the BV and 4.5, he said that he still preferred the 430 state of tune and capacity

IMPO smile
'purists' - ;-) I owned a 4.3 for 6 years and a 500 for the last 19 years.. the 500 replacing the 4.3.. The 500 is just say 5-10% better in some areas, and the T5 gearbox is much better in my opinion. Styling is identical, expect for the size of the mouth and personally I prefer the 500 nose cone. performance, just a bit more.
any griff is a rare car, say 1800 500s and 700 4.0/4.3s ? (and not all survive ;( )
I'd love to track my old 4.3 down though, so I could have a pair

interesting comment re actual kit cars such as Cobra - quite a few yrs ago i turned down a cobra with jag v12 on webbers for 12k - lesser cars now making over 20k

Guessing at, what, 200 430s still in UK?...I reckon low mileage, low owner, nice examples should fetch £25k within 2 yrs..dont you think? - After all it is The pivotal model that PW turned TVR around with, and historically that will become more significant - what will happen to prices when the new TVR company is launched, I i am really unsure - do you think values will change much when technically back in business?

I bought mine with just 2k miles (now 20k) and dont intend selling anytime soon, so values kinda irrelevant, however i think they are undervalued below 15k and poss over valued above 25k at present times

There is a kinda symmetry around value though - £25k new (PW told me prices wouldnt fall for several yrs second hand..and was right) bought mine pretty close to this nearly 3 yrs later - now quarter century later, value is fast becoming the same figure!

Unfortunately, £25k now, aint what £25k was, quarter century back /loss of interest over all those yrs still means it hasnt been a free ride! :s - but far better than losing against purchase price / rusting into oblivion smile

I havent driven mine for a long time due to one thing and another, but having cleaned and started it a few days back...i can say that despite now being in my sixties, i really miss driving it and must get the few items requiring attention due to storage done and back on the road - after all this time driving slow big cars, sitting in the Griff as she idled was kinda intimidating (particularly sitting nearly a foot lower than i have become accustomed to!)

I admired greatly what PW and his team achieved and very much miss talking to them and being able to wander around the utterly delightful rambling works :..(

I was captivated from the first glimpse of the pre production proto and fell in love with the Candy Apple + Ivory combo with OS Racing wheels ...following one example from event to event to drool over for a couple of yrs till i could justify the expense (apologies to your wife, she must have thought i had a crush on her as i took endless photos up and down the country!)

I am caught between not being much good in DIY mechanics and not trusting garages so keep putting off the resto jobs (live in Northants) - would prefer to find keen experienced amateur mechanic to work on the car in the barn.

Ramble over, as wandering off the plot smile

If you're referring to the Candy Apple 4.3 Griffith I remember that car, the owner told me it was the only customer car done in that colour as TVR knew it'd be a real pain to match all the panels. Next time I saw that car I noticed the drivers door was a very different shade to the rest of the body biggrin

I remember that era well, factory tour with Danielle in 94 and 99 to see new Griff 500's and Tuscan's, I miss it too

An early 4.0 has popped up on fleabay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/tvr-griffith-/1826853260...redfacexYAAOSwowxZdzyq

Less than 30 x 4.0 litre Griffs taxed according to howmanyleft (that includes ALL though, including 60s ones), and only 61 registered in 1992 or 1993 still active.

But their data is often out. 3600 with engines 4750 - 4999cc ?? There aren't that many exist!

Not sure why the red face smiley, it's part of the link!
