When changing my starter motor yesterday i seemed to of broken something in the hand brake mechanism
when parking it on the ramps.
The handbrake still works if i wedge something underneath it(Not ideal)but theres no ratchet also a bolt with the threads fairly Ucked was found on the floor underneath.
I only had the griffith on the ramps front end up and i couldnt really see how the hell u can get up to it,let alone adjust periodically as suggested somewhere.
Is it that i will need to reverse the Banana up my ramps and then i will find a loverly gapeing hole(ooh Matron) facing me in which it will be easy to find the problem, or is it a Arstard and i need to drop the exhaust.

This happened to mine. The handbrake mechanism is held in place by a bolt which goes through a bracket welded onto the chassis along side the gearbox. The bolts shear (hence the one on your garage floor) and the ratchet won't work.
I had to take out the central console in the car (to do this you need to slacken off the handbrake fully until the lever can be moved upright) and replace the bolt. If you're unlucky like me, a bit of bolt was left in the bracket which had to be cut out and rewelded. If you get to that stage it's time to talk to Dave Batty or another expert...

Havnt had a chance to look at it yet as a Broke my toe playing football on sunday and have been Slobbing it on the sofa all week,Anything for a break from work.
I think it looks like the whole bolt,is there suppose to b a nut aswell ?? or is the ratchet bit threaded or something else.

Excellent news. I think the bolts shear because when you apply the handbrake, the seating position forces you to pull it slightly to the driver's side. Over time the sideways pressure means it just decides to go to the great bolt-yard in the sky.
Glad you got it fixed. Driving round with a half brick to use as a chock when you go down the shops is hardly elegant is it?

Just out of interest, how did you go about changing your starter motor, mine needs doing, seemed simple enough, got her up on the stands, crawled under, How the hell do you get to the bolt on the top side of the motor ???
I haven't even been able to get enough pressure on the one I can see, let alone the one I can't.
Any advice would be most helpful.

Hi Neil,
I used one of them allen keys that fix into a racthet.
The one at the bottom i also use one of them elbows in the ratchet so that i could offset the handle and get better leveridge and use a quick sharpe burst to get it undone.
As for the top one i attacked from below going over the top of the starter and got my dad to guide me into the bolt from above.I used a number of extensions in the ratchet but didnt need the elbow,this one seemed to come undone easyier probably as it is a bit more sheltered from the elements.
You will also find ther is only just enough room to slide it out so dont be surprised as i was when i thought it werent gonna come out.
