Hi

I thought I'd taken a load of intimate pictures during my stripdown (ooerrr), but I can't seem to find one that reminds me what or where this spacer / washer thing is. Something up front and engine bay I think. Answers on a postcard...

Thank you kindly smile

Ps, I think I've only got one, but let me know if I need to go a-hunting for another in my box 'o bits!

If you hadn't said engine bay I would have said door hinge shim.

Engine mounting shim?

That was the bit that should have gone on first.......

I don't recall mine having a shim like that so cannot be too critical.

I have heard of people putting shims under engine mounts to raise it slightly, so that is possible. If you fitted new engine mounts you shouldn't need it any more.

Steering rack shim?

Or a shim for a swirl pot or pipe bracket?

If it has all gone back together OK without it, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Ah yes! Ironically, I looked at the old engine mounts last night and noticed that one of them had an 'official-looking' spacer under the bolts, whereas the other one did not. I wondered why this was, but this would make sense as there's two bolts in each mount. By jove, I think you've both gone and solved it! Much appreciated! smile

With new mounts you shouldn't need them, but I would hang on to the old ones just in case at some stage you think "if only the engine was a couple of mm higher then that wouldn't rub / touch / bit more clearance..."

You're most welcome. No need for effusive thanks, just a hoon in the Griffith when it's convenient, thanks.

It would have holes if it was first. The slots are there for sound, "I'll squeak that in later," reasons.

Absolutely; I think that Duncan meant it in a humorous “right at the start of the rebuild” sort of way, which made me smile. You’re right in that the slots would’ve made it easy to add it without disturbing the engine too much. Interesting; I wonder if the engine was put back in previously with an official spacer on one side and one accidentally missing on the other. I think I’ll miss them out altogether when the lump goes back in. smile

Yes, the slots are obviously there for the very reason of not having to remove bolts or studs.

However, I couldn't resist. I almost added that he had to now remove each suspension bush....

The thought of doing suspension bushes still keep me awake at night in a cold sweat. I've got to update my rebuild thread, but as a spoiler I've just re-bushed my front wishbones again after removing the previously added new ones so that I could get the wishbones powder coated. One of the bushes took around 20 tonnes of pressure and bent the really thick metal plinth on my press before it went all the way in! yikes

That b@stard is NEVER coming out again...

If you Google TVR engine mounts you will see that they are often queried. In typical TVR fashion there is no definitive answer but people often mention that one is needed only on one side. I seemed to remember that it was the driver's side. Presumably it is to centralise the engine in the chassis.
