I’ve spent a lot of time recently reading through readers' cars threads and thought I’d start one of my own, I’ll try keep it concise and to the point, hopefully be of some interest.

I’ve owned the car for just over 2 years now, it came in to my possession through a Facebook bonus ball lottery raffle, the best twenty quid I’ve spent, but for the money I’ve invested, I could have bought a sorted car….but we don’t talk about that.

The car had been used for drifting by its previous owner so was extremely rough, but despite its looks it was actually pretty solid underneath, with only 70,000 miles on it.

Amazing what a wash and sticker removal will do.

It had a couple of issues, the main one being that the piston rings were toast and it burned oil severely. Fortunately, it did have some modifications that could be kept (Roll cage, HSD coilovers, Nardi Wheel).

For the first year of ownership, the car was off the road being made roadworthy, the major items being: New Engine, welded diff to LSD, new gearbox and clutch, replacement panels, source and fit interior trim, aftermarket exhaust/manifold, new wheel, rust prevention (pictures in some sort of order).

It took a year to get it back on the road with a fresh MOT and its first long trip was driving down from my parents in Aberdeenshire to Glasgow, taking in some of the NC500 and Applecross on the way.

Since then it’s been used as a daily driver with modifications continuing: new wheels, brake refresh, clutch refresh. Mechanically the cars pretty good, but being an ex-drifter it’s a little rough around the edges.

Future plans are to keep modifying/tidying it up, fit a 99’ mk2 head and eventually supercharge/turbo it. I’d like to take it to some track days or autocross events once it’s a little more sorted.

I’ll keep this up to date with any future work and make sure to get a Pistonheads sticker chucked on it.

Thanks for reading.
Scott

In preparation for an upcoming road trip and with heavy rain forecast I thought I’d get the car up in the air for some maintenance/modification, this turned out to be bad timing with some of the hottest weather on record. What was meant to be a weekend of work turned into a 4-week ordeal......”if I’m doing that I may as well do this....and this....and that”....it escalated.
So what’s been done since the last update, in a sweltering garage, with an out of commission convertible....in the hottest weather of the year.
Revlimiter “Alpha” gauges fitted with some red needles, following the Revlimiter tutorial, with some white LEDS. I’ve always loved the offset rotation in comparison to stock, quality service was great so I’ll be buying more parts in the future.

Jass Performance Heavy Duty Frame Rails fitted that were picked up locally, these would have been easy to fit if my frame rails weren’t crushed and my floor pan dented on the passenger side. In conjunction with the roll bar and inner wing stiffeners these have made a huge difference, reducing scuttle shake and rattles drastically, it now takes a bigger bump/undulation to unsettle the car now. I’ll maybe look into some door bars if a set pop up, but I’m in no rush at the minute.

After trying out a budget bucket seat to see if it’s a direction I’d like to go in, the stock seats are great but I was having to brace against the door and transmission tunnel. Budget seat bought and test fitted, then sold as it had served its purpose.

IMG_20190721_191315 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Proceeded to pick up a set of Cobra Clubmans locally that were previously fitted in a classic mini clubman, black vinyl with red piping. They’re in pretty good condition and have since been fitted with some GSM adapter brackets, which seem to come with no fitting instructions.

First impressions: I think you sit slightly higher but not by much, support when going round a corner is great, no longer need to brace against the door/transmission tunnel. Compared to the other bucket seats I tried these are maybe more road focussed, after doing 6.5 hours in them recently I wasn’t in too much discomfort, certainly no more than the standard seats.
Picked up some Willans 4 point harnesses in black and installed eyebolts so these can be run in conjunction with the standard seatbelts, these haven’t been fitted yet.
I’ve been running an Ebay-special stainless manifold for the last year, due to cutting the stock manifold off due to seized bolts. As far as I can tell it’s just a copy of the stock manifold in stainless steel, short runners into 2” pipe back to the cat area. I found a cheap second hand mx5-Parts 4-2-1 manifold that collects into 2.25” that matches the rest of my existing system.

IMG_20190803_162830 by Scott Reid, on Flickr
IMG_20190814_222326 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Unfortunately, the change in manifold led to my silenced de-cat (370mm) being too short, so as a quick fix I got an M2 Motorsport unsilenced de-cat (440mm), benefit being that the full exhaust system is now stainless steel. Whilst I was there I also replaced all exhaust hangers with polyurethane.

IMG_20190815_191324 by Scott Reid, on Flickr
Serviced all the oils on the car following the BOFI Racing guide for the diff and gearbox, oils that were replaced had only been in there a year at best, the gearbox turret oil seems to go black fairly quickly as this is the third time I’ve changed it now. Engine oil replaced with fully synth Motul Sport 5W40 from OPIE OILS and a K&N oil filter (handy as it has a hex fitting on the end for fitting/removal).

I’ve since replaced my Uniroyals with some Pilot Sport 3’s on the front, budgets moved to the rear as the excessive camber will chew through them in no time. Next task over the winter is un-seizing all the alignment bolts and fixing the 2 degree camber in the rear, which I think is causing the tendency to understeer when pushed.
Just replaced the door speakers and looking to get a bit more bass so a slimline sub may be fitted if I can decide where to put it. Ideally where the spare wheel used to be as I’ve never used that. I’m also in the process of changing out all exterior bulbs to LED’s, as well as looking into the LED ring mod to the rear lights, I’ll do a comparison once complete.
In bad news it looks like I’m going to need two new sills sooner rather than later (probably before the next MOT) so I’m starting to look into what it’s going to cost. I did consider splitting it and trying that 350Z I’ve always wanted, but I’ve been informed from the wife that that won’t be happening, I’m too invested in this one.
Still plenty work to be done, still flirting with the idea of saving for some forced induction, we’ll see how far that gets, see what’s left after the rust is fixed.
Couple pictures since it’s back on the road.

That looks lovely! As a fellow Eunos owner I’ve a few questions if I may...

Did you do the air intake through the bulkhead mod, and if so what do you make of it?

What roll bar is it?

What size/offset Rota Grids are they? I blinking love those wheels!

Yeah the Randall intake is just a hole in the bulkhead, some silicone hose and an enclosed filter. Rollbar is gc fabrications and the wheels are 7x15" et15, they rub a little with rolled arches but only on extreme cornering.

Nice work! I have a '93 Eunos too. How much of a pain were the frame rails to install? Thought about this for mine.

Cheers,

Drew.

Hi Drew, a full day and a helper make it a lot easier, I have a dent in the floor from the previous owner that made it a bit of a chew, but we got there. Well worth doing if you have supporting mods (wing brave, roll cage), I might go further and look at some door bars.

Time for another update, after the car passed it's MOT first time I decided it was time to do something about the alignment, it's had one alignment in my time of ownership and at that time only the front could be marginally adjusted as they were all seized. The rear has always been at a drift friendly 2 degrees, it chews tyres.

I started by trying to loosen them, then snap them, I should have just cut them off, it would have saved a couple hours.

IMG_20200204_222837 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

These are the original D shaped design, I'm guessing they've never been changed. Replaced with the new design with 2 slots and thicker washers. With the car up in the air decided to refresh some of the underside: exhaust heat sheild, 6 point brace, underseal.

Managed to get a set of void fillers for the diff, should eliminate the axle tramp that I've been experiencing. Unfortunately found some snapped studs in the lower diff mounts, drilled these out and put everything back together.

IMG_20200215_152302 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Sold my single exit MX5Parts exhaust as it was clashing and rattling off the underside. Been trying to source a replacement, got a dual exit MX5Parts cat-back (top) and a cobalt dual exit back box (bottom).

IMG_20200213_180806 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Cut the bumper in preparation, once I managed to get it off the car.

Unfortunately, the cobalt doesn't line up enough with the mid pipe, so I'm in the process of fitting the MX5Parts dual. Clearance seems to be better than the single exit. I'm getting videos of each setup so will post up a rough comparison. Shame couldn't get the cobalt to fit, but might keep it and try again.

I've also found small leak in one of my brake lines so will need to swap that out, for a replacement. All that's left to do is finish up the under-sealing then take it for an alignment. My hope is that I'll make it to a track day/autocross event this year as I'm keen to develop my driving skills, at least that's the goal for this year.

I'll get some actual car pictures when it's finally out of the garage.

What a transformation! Nice job. BTW I recognised the original wheels that came with it when you got it as Wolfrace RaceLite's. I remember launching them back in 98. What happened to them?

Thanks, they were sold on, the tyres were long past it and I'd picked up a set of wheels with some tyres already fitted.

With the car back on the ground I took it for an alignment, getting it setup to the BOFI fast road settings.

IMG_20200306_171057 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

The rear camber is the best we could get, since one of my HSD's is seized at a slightly different height, not ideal but fine for now.

Fitted a 4 point harness I've had sitting about for a while, still retain the standard seat belt, these are easily removed from the bottom and kept behind the seat, so I don't need to faff fitting it to the roll bar every time I want to use them. They're not to bad to use in a daily driver in all fairness, but I've not gone on any massively long drives yet.

PSX_20200310_173115 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Lastly, took part in my first autosolo, thoroughly enjoyed it (despite finishing near the back of the field) I'll be booking up for the next event whenever that is. I'll need to try some different setups/tyre pressures as running the road setup resulted in massive under steer.

PSX_20200316_140432 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Quick snap of some of the cars there that day, the black 5 in front of mine was the overall Auto-solo winner that day, it's running a supercharger (maybe one day!)

Yeah they're great cars, this is my third car but first mk1. Your car looked great, I've got those side stripes to go on as well once I get my sills sorted out.

Good thread. I’ve probably spoken to you as I was on that drive where we all did the Mennock pass etc. I was the guy in the yellow Megane letting the side down. I really need to get another mx5.

Yeah we did, really rated the megane, sure you'll get another 5 in the future. Everyone always seems to come back to them!

Time for a 3 year update, took me far longer to find this thread than I care to admit. So what's happened in all that time, well firstly I ended up swapping in a mk2 1.8 BP4W head with a 20thou skim, throttle body, starter and mk2.5 inlet manifold - as they flow a lot better than the mk1 head and have better cam profiles and head castings. Ended up having to pull it out again after a couple hundred miles as the aftermarket cam seals leaked, so had to swap them for Mazda OEM units.

IMG_20201211_084445 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Serviced the engine whilst I was in there as it hadn't been serviced since we installed it in 2017, fitted some LED rings to the rear lights then took it for it's first test drive:
PSX_20200803_002220 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Car went away for 2 months to have the sills fixed, that's a separate story but needless to say the guys no longer in business and I'm not surprised, so with sills fixed I decided to resolve some oil leaks - namely rear crank seal. Whilst in there I swapped out the 2 year old clutch with a BOFI performance clutch.
PSX_20210131_191754 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Fitted some GC-Fabrication door bars and swapped back to the stock seats, changed the doors for another pair in slightly better condition
IMG_20210329_191916 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

By now it was time for another MOT, which it passed, annual MOT picture:
PSX_20210429_153901 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Actually took it to my second autosolo (yes it did get used sometimes), whilst in the background started to compile parts for fitting an M62 supercharger that comes from a Merc.
IMG_20210808_184429 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Just before started fitting that though, had a change of heart and sold it all on, purchasing a turbo kit instead:
IMG_20211118_224403 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

It didn't come with everything, so once I'd gathered up everything I had the following: Flyin' Miata cast manifold and down pipe elbow, 2.5" downpipe, Garret GT2554r Turbo, EV14 660cc Injectors, BOFI Intercooler kit, DIY-EFI Core4 Speeduino ECU, AEM Wideband, Stack Gauges. First step was fitting the aftermarket ECU and getting the car up and running, which proved a bit of a challenge but with remote help of the tuner we managed. Interior being put back together - gauges fitted into the dash itself.
IMG_20220321_195158 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

By now another year has passed and it's due another MOT, cue annual picture. Car thankfully passed on the new ECU and tune.
IMG_20220426_085202 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

So with the car now ready, I spent a long time taking it from this:
IMG_20220626_164245 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

To this:
2022-09-16_11-24-46 by Scott Reid, on Flickr
IMG_20230204_165842 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Video of proof that it runs (click on it to listen):
petal_20230129_221845 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Other things that were added: Supermiata engine mounts, GFB coil on plug conversion, mk2 mx5 CAM sensor added, Spyked Performance Bonnet vents, MeisterR Clubrace Coilovers, Mk2.5 Big Brake Conversion, M2 2.5" Cat Back exhaust system. Needless to say it's barely moved this year as I've been tinkering, but it's MOT is due next week once the tuners checked everything over. Plan is to actually drive it this year and not do anything more drastic than maintain it - as it's become a running joke that I work on it more than drive it. I don't even have any up to date photos of it outside the garage!

Anyway 3 years condensed into one post, I'll try keep this a bit more up to date in future.
