Good stuff Paul.
Did a similar variation back in 2016 after also being disappointed with the poor rear plate lighting.

Thanks, hadn’t seen or thought of putting reflective tape in there - I’ll do that to mine

Was about to ask the same question, number plates aren't pretty

What about the Police?

Once when down the boozer, overheard someone mentioning about wiring a switch into the number plate light circuit and tail lights

Naughty though

We all did that back in the good ol' 12-car road rally days... brake light circuit especially; that put a stop to people hanging on to your tail biglaugh

Yep I concur and rallied extensively in the 70's and 80's and quite a few had this switch.

To reduce the chance of someone running into the back of you at night. The side lights are hardly special and there is no centre brake light. A bright yellow rectangle might just means someone will see you in time.

As Big Dunc says.

Griffith in dark colours are not that visible from the rear. Others have used much brighter LED's I chose to just make the rear more visible.

All of the above, I went with two of these 7,000 lumen 70W LED Panels.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-70W-7-000LM-LED-Pan...

These panels spread the light over a much wider area of the number plate so work perfectly and give the light output of two (almost three) headlights behind the tanslusent numberplate.

Works well for just £18.00, and because the entire numberplate area is filled there's no benefit or need to line the void with reflective material thumbup

Here's the link for another option for those considering rear lighting, and also mounting solutions.
