Hi folks, thanks for the tips, will certainly give them a try. As for finding someone with TVR experience, when the cars not in a driveable condition and there's no one local, then needs must. I would have thought any auto electrician worth his salt ( and obviously mine wasn't ) should be able to fault diagnose what is basically a Rover V8 with software enhancement, or am I fooling myself ?
The basics of a 4 stroke engine is the same whatever- it just needs a spark at the right time, and the correct fuel air ratio. A precat set up is pretty basic, sensors into the ECU for temp / airflow / and rpm simply set the amount of fuel. The ECU'S don't fail that often, but AFMs do as they get cooked by the exhaust. The results are normally horrible over fuelling, making the car run very badly. This will show up as soot black plugs- so its always a good place to start by any mechanic. Just awkward to get some plugs out if you dont have a knuckle joint.

Thanks for your reply. Have checked condition of plugs and they look fine, light chocolate brown coating, Magnicor leads all good too. Distributor contacts cleaned and look fine also arm in good condition as well with no signs of cracks.

Not a fan of Magnecore myself, but thats an aside. Try the temp test on the exhaust header then, but you have to do it quickly on an engine from cold. Leave it too long after you turn the engine off, and the heat evens out across the headers, and confuses the issue. You can do it by melting a cable tie on a hot engine to see what melts and what does not.

Just a thought.

Something that may help is if you tell people what your region is in your profile then you might find aTVR owner just around the corner that may offer assisting with a visit..

Current restrictions applicable of course.

My friend had a similar issue on his Chim. Odds were not firing. We checked the igniter cable back to the ECU plug and had continuity. When we took the plug back off we noticed this pin was sitting higher than the rest. It clicked back into place when pushed with a screwdriver. Might be worth a check. Is the exhaust manifold cold on that side with the engine running?

I'm the guy who posted the thread linked to by 5.0 litre above and it turned out to be a poor connection on to the AFM due to bent and corroded pins on the scart type connector it uses. I can firmly recommend Peter Croft if you're in the Surrey/Kent/Sussex area as he's the mobile TVR guru who sorted my car after Fernhurst, APM Automotive and other garages spent over 10 years trying to find the fault. Took him 15 minutes...

PM me for his number, the best TVR engineer I have experienced in 24 years of ownership. It's not like having a good TVR garage working on your car - more like having your own personal Carrol Shelby!!

Saxon.

Hi Scottliv & Saxon, thanks for the tips, will certainly check out the ecu scart connections. The TVR man sounds really good but unfortunately I live a bit too far away in Yorkshire. Thanks anyway.
