It's bloody well happened again, and I cannot get this car started. It's in the garage and got it going earlier but the revs were going up and down and it stalled itself (wish I'd given it 2000 revs now manually!). Since then it turns over, sounding like it is catching occaionally but doesn't. I've left it 3 hours and still the problem - might have to be the AA unless anyone can help me. How long do I have to wait for the ECU to reset? If I keep going like this, the battery will be dead before long...
This is really peeing me off as all I want to do is drive the thing! Might have to leave it here over Christmas now which is not what I wanted.... Aggghhh!
Edited to say - just seen the smiling face at the top of the page again - it's a bit different now!!

This is very odd, the revs do rise and fall a bit when it is started but after a min or two it clears it's thriat and is fine. I doubt disconnecting the ECU will do anything. It might be worth cleaning the stepper motor.
When you are trying to start it are you pressing the throttle? If so don't.
Good luck

Cheers again guys - I managed to get it going after what seemed an eternity - went for a 30 mile drive to try and charge up the battery again.
David, the problem was that during the rise and fall bit, it fell a bit too far after a few oscillations - the battery light started flickering (at the low points) and then it stalled and the problems started. I think in future once it starts (if?), I'll apply a bit of throttle to keep it at say 1500rpm for a minute or two. What do you think?
Will try the stepper motor too.
Really enjoyed the 30 mile ride though, so I'm smiling again.

Glad you got it going, yes holding the revs if it looks like dropping is a good idea. It is probably also worth giving the stepper a clean.
Cheers

There is a posibility that the ECU have kept an error from the "rpm" sensor. This sensor gives info about the exactly rpm's of the engine to the ECU. So when you first jump-start the engine and the idle rpm's were not steady at all..., the ECU kept that error on it's memory and now you have probs with the idle rpm's. You can easily fix this by goin to a service garaz or a dealer. They will connect your ECU with a tool that checks if there are any errors on the ECU's memory and erase them in case this is the problem.
Next step in case everything is fine...give it a good stick mate, from heaven (1st gear) to hell...
