taking off rear plate

i want to take of my rear plate to check something but not sure what holds it on. if i take it off do i have to replace the sticky stuff thats holding it in place or will it just pull off and stick back on

If it's the same as the plate on a Chimaera, I found sticking it back on works OK the first couple of times...

Depends on how it was stuck on

Usually sticky pads but don't force things as plates may snap or the paint might come off. Use a hair dryer to warm things up in this weather and it will make the job easier.

It's very sticky double sided sticky tape -best to remove all traces of the old and replace it with new stuff. It's (usually) a 3M type tape -I keep a roll in the garage. If u r nr Egham yr welcome to some!!

I have to do the same, personal plate for Christmas. Is it always sticky tape as I have two small screws on mine, mind you cannot get them to move!! more WD40 maybe??

The stuff that held my plate on, looked more like double sided draft excluder. It did the job though.

The stuff you want does like double sided draft excluder and is available from Halfords, couple of quid, I think it's called trim fixing tape. Does the job.

I think it comes in 2 thicknesses too. Given the slight curvature of the number plate when fixed it might be better to get the thicker variety for more compliance.

I reckon the best type of tape to use on plates is the 3M Acrylic Foam Tape, Dark Grey (Part No. 06238). The tape is hideously sticky and easy to use. It doesn't create much 'peel stress' so when you come to take it off it has no danger of removing any paint with it. Audi use it on the front of the TT's which have highly curved fronts and need some extra adhesion. It also smells great!

I bought my last lot of this stuff from Audi for about £25. Ok, it costs more than other tapes but you certainly won't ever worry about plates dropping off or worry about destroying your car or plate for those nasty 'locked out' moments.

lost a rear plate a while ago and not cheap to replace, so drilled a small hole thru to the metal plate and put a small nut and bolt thru to hold in place. the other side was just held on by number plate tape.
