Can somebody help please before I set light to my griff (4.0 litre 92). Went out in at at the weekend and it ran very rough as if it was only on 4 cyls. Got to the top of my road and it stalled and has refused to restart. I had noticed on the run before that the idle was very fast but I don't know if that's just a coincidence. I have eliminated plugs, leads, rotor arm, distributor cap and coil. It turns, there is a spark but it won't fire. I have read elsewhere that the stepper motor may need cleaning but would a dirty stepper stop the car from running ??? Sorry for the long message but I am getting desperate and would appreciate some thoughts before I send for professional help and recieve yet another dent in the wallet.

What was the weather like? Sounds kind of like it has flooded, which might be caused by your sparks going astray if there is any damp around. One way to tell is to try starting it at night - you will see little sparks all over the place. In which case new plugs, dry the leads and you should be off. Other than that you are into basic trouble shooting mode looking for the state of the plugs, is it getting any petrol, how is the spark strength anfd timing.

I guess you will already have spent quite a bit replacing the ignition by trial and error, and if you carry on down this route you could spend a lot more money looking for faults in the fuel injection. It may well be cheaper in the long run to get a professional to sort it out. Sorry if this is not the answer you want to hear.

change your coil amplifier sounds as if its gone kaputtt

Thanks for the replies. The weather was bone dry so I don't think dampness is an issue. The spark does seem a little weak to me but I'm only an amateur. Where is the coil amplifier is it easy to change ???

Hi the coil amp
sits next to the coil on a bracket they overheat and either start to break down ( bad starting problems) or they go completly and thats it
they are not expensive and can be replaced easily worth a shot

I may seem a bit dim but I can't find mine. The coil is bolted via a bracket to the side of the engine. Leading to the coil is 2 pairs of wires which then disappear with a bunch of others towards the bulkhead. There is no sign of anything else wired in before the coil. What sort of size is the coil amplifier and is it possible that it could have been removed previously (the car ran fine until recently) or is it likely to be located elsewhere.

the module your looking for is to the right of the coil if your stood in front of car looking at engine bay ie drivers seat is on your left.the module may be buried under a "birds nest" of wiring,unless of course someone has infact re positioned it due to heat problems then all you can do is follow the wiring.its a little bigger than a matchbox but slightly thinner.of couse you could be running on a points and condenser set up in which case you wont have one!

TMS have just quoted me £75+ vat for one. Does that sound right, is there anywhere else I can get one ???

That is about the going rate. You can get chepaer ones from Halfords but they are not the same spec and die very very quickly.

They can also be bolted onto the side of the dizzy.

Yes it was on the side of the dizzy changed it and still no luck. Turns over weak spark and no sign of firing. I give up. I'm going to the pub and having it sent away for surgery. Unless there is any thing else that I could try ??

neil , sorry it wasn't the amp, symptoms sounded the same as mine . do you have an alarm/immobiliser fitted to your car?
has the dizzy moved ?
fuel pump filter?
can't think of anything else , good luck

Dont know if its any help but i have a copy of the Range Rover EFI test sheets for a 3.9v8 with lucas hot wire EFI, that i can e-mail you. It gives a series of test to do on the 40 pin plug on the ECU
with a multi metre (if you can get at it on a griff)
