a couple of points to bear in mind when buying a new chip "off the shelf" for your tvr. unless your car i running absolutely perfectly, simply putting in a new chip to gain more horsepower or improve the engine running may not give you the results you want. If you have any faults with rich/lean fuel mixture, poor injectors, faulty leads/plugs then you are just papering over the cracks. how do i know? i have just spent 3 hours on the rolling road with Mark Adams setting up the chip specificly for my car. the result -my '92 4.3 griff is now reving more smoothly, burning fuel more efficiently and producing almost as much bhp as the 500 that had been on the rolling road before me. a 10 year old griff is bound to go out of tune over the course of its life, and if you speak to Mark he will tell you that the original tvr chip was the wrong one for the car anyway, so all i have had done is have the car set up to produce what it should do in standard tune the day it rolled off the production line - no bhp upgrades (no insurance problems) just how it should be. it is now absolutely marvellous, runs perfectly and is extremely responsive. ok - so i spent more money than just getting a "plug and go chip" but with all the other ad ons (i needed new plugs, cap, leads etc) it was money very well spent. Just one final thought, Mark and the other mechanic could detect a barely perceptable misfire at 6,000 rpm. i could not hear any diference, but they kept working on the car until they cured it. they did not shut up shop until 8.00pm when they were absolutely sure my car was running perfectly - i am sure most other places would kick you out at 5.30pm and tell you to book it in another day to sort it out. Mark Adams is an excellent chap - his details are in the club mag. if you want to know anymore details on my experience then e-mail me.

The insurance thing is important.

My 520 is insured with Sunninghill and is pretty well moded. The only thing standard is the diff now. The premium is the straight standard premium. The 2001 mods (5.2 litre engine and so on) were documented in an article in Sprint a couple of months ago.

Sunninghills underwriters came into their office for a meeting and while they were in reception they looked at the mag and read the article on the 520. They asked the Sunninghill cars if they knew anything about the car. They said lots and said that they should to as they were insuring it!

Underwriters went white apparently. Sunninghill then showed them the modification report with roll cages, big brakes suspension mods etc and they strated breathing again. With TVRs providing the mods are sensible, notifying the insurers is simply a formality.

Had my '98 Griff 500 chipped by Mark, after I'd fitted one the the ACT Carbon Fibre inlet plenums
I'd be interested to know which size/combination you went for, Tim's web site lists a whole load of different sized trumpets etc. Rich...

Rich

I went for the slightly larger (63mm I think) throttle body, with carbon plenum and carbon trumpets.

You really have to do this in conjunction with a re-chip to get the fuel etc. set up correctly. The bolt-on bits alone won't realise their full potential without it.

BTW Sprinting the car at Loton Park on Sunday if you want to have a look at the thing.

Hi

Are there many TVRs in this sprint (its National B isn't it?) as I haven't been along to any motorsports this season and fancy getting out?

Cheers

I think at least a couple of the very skilled, interesting to watch TVR pilots will be there (Pete Humphries, Mike Catania, Steve Lyle etc.) and I'll be there cluttering the bottom of the time sheets.

Not done Loton before, but it's reputation, and in particular the various trees, brick footing and other trackside hazards, mean it'll definitely be a 6 or 7 tenths job for me!
